The Incident

The accident happened on a busy stretch within the city limits. Witnesses and the viral CCTV footage showed that both motorcycles seemed to be moving at a speed that reached an extreme when one of them made a sudden move resulting in a direct, heavy impact. The force of the crash was so significant that both vehicles were almost totaled. Onlookers attended to help, but one of the riders sustained injuries of enough magnitude that it is said he died on the scene before medical attention arrived. The second rider was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Two-Wheelers are Vulnerable

This tragedy reminds us of a sad truth: Among the most vulnerable road users are motorcyclists. In contrast to car occupants, riders receive almost no structural protection in a crash. Add speed to the dynamic, and even minor lapses in judgment result in fatal error, and all of that becomes deadly. Although the investigation was ongoing, officials said initial conclusions were poor defensive riding and too much speed was a major factor in the case.

A Plea for Road Discipline

Both road safety experts and local police have relied on this incident to emphasize those non-negotiable rules of the road:

  • Speed Limit: roads are public spaces, not racetracks. Complying with the speed limits allows for the reaction time which is essential in avoiding contact.
  • Protective Gear: Although a helmet may not be the only thing that keeps you from crashing, at the same time, it is very often its only barrier between a survivable injury and a fatal head trauma.
  • Alertness: Short falls of concentration for no reason save a mobile phone call, or a dangerous overtake can be permanent.

Moving Toward Prevention

Everyone left behind on the road is a grieving family, and a traumatized community. Avoiding these tragic incidents will take a twofold approach: strict enforcement of traffic laws by authorities, followed by a radical shift in the mindset of riders. Since Shivamogga grieves yet again with this latest loss, you must go and feel as though the message is loud and clear: Safety is not a choice, but a necessity. May this traumatic experience be a wakeup call to every person that steps out onto the street and that if you get there later than not being there at all is a better way of living.
