The accident took place at 3:30 a.m. near Bharula village under the Civil Lines police station limits, said the police. The victims were travelling in an Ertiga from Lilhatola in Anuppur district to the holy city of Chitrakoot in Satna district when the speeding vehicle crashed into a truck parked on the road.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the car was completely mangled, and rescue teams had to work for a number of hours to pull the car’s occupants out.

Initially, five people were said to have died in the accident. But the death toll was later revised after a woman who was presumed dead was revived by doctors at Umaria District Hospital.

Additional Superintendent of Police Alok Kumar Sharma said the accident took place near Siddhababa Dham Bharaula, killing four people at the site.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. V.S. Chandel said the fifth occupant, identified as Khushbu Marco, did not show signs of life when she was brought to the hospital. But doctors performed intensive Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and she regained breathing.

Khushbu Marco is still in critical condition and has been referred to Katni District Hospital for advanced treatment.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident and will look into the crash in more detail as to what happened and whether the truck was parked as per the road safety standards.

So the incident has once again raised questions that stationary heavy vehicles on highways and roads are not easily warned of their dangers— particularly at night and early morning when visibility is low.
