Mumbai’s renowned GSB Seva Mandal in King’s Circle has secured a huge ₹703.27 crore insurance cover for its Ganeshotsav celebrations for 2026, which is way above the ₹474 crore cover taken last year. As an annual celebration, it is known that a lot of visitors are expected and the MahaGanpati idol’s ornaments are worth it.
The GSB Seva Mandal will celebrate its 72nd Ganeshotsav this year. The main five-day celebration is scheduled from September 14 to September 18, 2026, while the first look of the idol will be unveiled during the ‘Virat Darshan’ ceremony at 8 pm on September 12.
One of the major attractions will be the MahaGanpati idol, which is expected to be decorated with 66 kilograms of gold and around 335 kilograms of silver and gems. Many of the ornaments have been collected over the years by devotees and sevadars of the mandal.
The insurance amount has increased dramatically in the last few years. The mandal had insurance coverage of approximately ₹400 crore in 2024 and ₹474 crore in 2025, and increased to ₹703.27 crore for this year’s celebrations. Rising precious-metal values and the scale and risks of the event are among the reasons for the wider coverage.
However, the ₹703.27 crore figure should not be interpreted as the monetary value of the Ganpati idol itself. The insurance package covers various types of risks associated with the festival, such as people, jewellery and valuables, property and liabilities, depending on the terms of the policy. A complete component-wise breakdown of the final ₹703.27 crore cover has not been publicly disclosed.
Festival insurance is meant to protect organisers from financial risk from large crowd sizes, valuable assets, temporary structures, etc. Personal accident coverage can protect eligible workers and volunteers, and public liability coverage can cover some claims in case of third-party injury or property damage if insurance is covered. And coverage for valuables can also protect against certain risks (such as theft or accidental damage) if the insurance is available.
The scale of insurance also mirrors the huge popularity of the GSB Ganpati celebrations. The King’s Circle mandal is full of people every year, and the safety and security of the crowds is a top priority for the organizers. This is why the mandal has said that ensuring the safety and security of devotees is an important reason for taking extensive insurance protection.
The celebrations will also feature a lot of religious and charitable activity. There are thousands of devotees as well, and the mandal is also associated with food distribution and other seva activities. Daily food charity services are expected to benefit 40,000 people during the celebration.
