Two people were killed and six others injured when a fire erupted in a 12-storey residential building in Vile Parle West, Mumbai yesterday in which a 2.5-year-old child was killed and six others were injured after the 11th floor of a 12-storey building at Mumbai's 11th floor was destroyed in a fire. The Mumbai Fire Brigade troops rushed to the building after fire services were notified of the blaze as soon as they heard about the fire.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the call at around 10:02 PM. The fire was initially classified as Level-1 at 10:08 pm and was upgraded to Level-2 at 10:16 p.m. As the situation evolved, the fire was raised to Level-2 at 10:16 pm and a bigger firefighting effort was launched. Firefighters battled the fire for a few hours and finally extinguished it at 1:01 a.m.
According to information available, the fire was contained to the 11th-floor premises and covered a floor of about 4,000 square feet. Some parts of the apartment and household items were damaged in the incident. Electrical wiring and installations, an air-conditioner unit, household items such as a sofa, a bed, a false ceiling, kitchen utensils were among them.
An estimated 8 people were injured in the incident. Two of them were admitted to Cooper Hospital and six others were transferred to Nanavati Hospital for treatment. The casualties and injuries are concerning and the fire had some health problems in the residential premises caused by the fire and the conditions of the flames and circumstances in these houses at the time of the fire.
At Cooper Hospital, Manoj Sonavane and Shiv Dwivedi both were treated for their injuries. They were both discharged from hospital after treatment. The fact that there was one firefighter among those wounded speaks to the dangers that emergency personnel face in trying to contain fires in high-rise residential buildings.
At Nanavati Hospital, the situation was more dire. Two victims - 2.5-year-old Abir and 23-year-old Ankita - were confirmed dead. The death of the young child has taken the entire family to tears and the population to tears as well.
Four other injured people were identified as Parth, 32, Hiren, 64, Yashasvi, 33 and Abhishek. Their condition was stable. Yashasvi and Abhishek were treated and discharged, while the injured people were still under treatment.
Mumbai Fire Brigade’s response to the fire was to tackle the blaze in a high-rise residential setting in which smoke, electrical connections and narrow indoor areas can make firefighting efforts very difficult. The fire was contained to the affected buildings, and did not spread to other parts of the building, the fire brigade said.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be established. The fire investigators will be asking things about electrical wiring, appliances and other facilities in the apartment to determine why the fire emerged.
The incident once more shows the importance of fire safety measures in Mumbai’s high-rise residential buildings. Electrical systems are constantly checked out, air-conditioning equipment is kept properly running, fire alarms are working and emergency preparedness is key to preventing fires or reducing its effect.
