A dramatic robbery at a State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Nagpur has raised fresh questions about security arrangements at banks after a man escaped with ₹4.53 lakh in cash.
The incident took place on September 11, 2026, and it was reported that the bank robber was masked or partially disguised and carried out the robbery by using chilli powder to confuse people on his way out. CCTV footage of the incident was also uploaded online.
Chilli Powder Used During Escape
According to accounts, the accused used chilli powder against bank employees as he fled the premises. The strange approach seems to have been to temporarily disorient the staff and prevent them from immediately stopping or pursuing him.
The act was quick and the accused could leave the bank with the stolen cash.
Chilli powder is not so new in Nagpur to be used in robberies. But the latest incident has caught people’s eyes because the incident took place inside an SBI branch and surveillance cameras were in place.

The robber escaped from the bank with about ₹4.53 lakh.

Not to Be Confused With June Nagpur Robbery
The latest SBI robbery should not be confused with another chilli-powder robbery in Nagpur in June 2026.
In that case, three unknown men had targeted forex manager Khilesh Sahu who was carrying ₹7.16 lakh. Police said the suspects lured him by making a fake foreign currency exchange deal before attacking him near Ambazari Lake and escaping with the cash.
That incident involved a forex manager and did not take place inside an SBI branch.
Police Investigation Underway
The latest SBI robbery is still under investigation and authorities will have to establish the suspect's identity, motive and exact sequence of events.
Until the investigation is complete, the allegations should be treated as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
