Narendra Modi's political career spans several decades and has taken him from organisational work in Gujarat to the top executive post in India. In October 2001, he became Chief Minister of Gujarat and continued to serve in that position until May 2014. He was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014.

Modi worked in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a member and worked in organisational and political roles. His transition from party management to state administration came with the introduction of a new government in 2001 in Gujarat.

Taking charge of Gujarat in 2001

Modi became Gujarat Chief Minister at a difficult time for the state. Gujarat had suffered an earthquake in January 2001, and during that time it had also seen a cyclone, drought, and political instability. Modi has recalled these circumstances when talking about the beginning of his tenure.

Reconstruction and rehabilitation after the earthquake became major issues for the state government. Throughout the years, Modi's administration also focused on infrastructure, investment, agriculture and administration.

His tenure in Gujarat continued for more than 12 years, making him the longest-serving chief minister in the state, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

2002 Gujarat Violence and Political Controversy

One of the most controversial periods of Modi's political career was in 2002 when communal violence erupted across Gujarat after the burning of a coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra.

The violence caused intense political and legal investigation of the state government’s responses and of Modi’s role as chief minister. The topic was a major point of political debate for years.

The 2002 violence became an important part of discussions about Modi's political career, not only in Gujarat but also across the country. There followed legal processes and investigations into allegations of government action.

Gujarat Governance and National Recognition

During his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, Modi became a nationally recognised BJP leader. His government promoted Gujarat as an investment and industrial destination, and his administration made infrastructure development, agriculture and governance reforms a priority.

Supporters of this development made mention of the state’s economic and infrastructure development; critics continued to question issues of social and governance. These divergent assessments are now a part of the political debate surrounding his Gujarat tenure.

2014: The move from Gujarat to Delhi

The next major turning point came in 2013-14, when Modi was named the BJP's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

The 2014 general election transformed his political position from a state-level leader into a national figure. As per the Election Commission records, Modi won the Varanasi parliamentary constituency in 2014 as a BJP candidate.

Following the election, Modi took the oath as India's Prime Minister on May 26, 2014.

2019 election and a second term

Modi returned as Prime Minister after the 2019 Lok Sabha election. The BJP won the 2014 and 2019 parliamentary elections in India under his leadership, according to the Prime Minister's Office.

His second term saw the central government pursue a number of major policy initiatives, including taxation, infrastructure, welfare delivery, defence, manufacturing and digital services.

2024 Election and Third Term

The 2024 Lok Sabha election also marked Modi’s national political career. He then took the oath for the third term as Prime Minister.

The 2024 election results and detailed constituency data are maintained by the Election Commission of India.

Modi’s political journey is thus over two decades as the leader of a government, starting from his appointment as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001 and continuing through his third term as Prime Minister.

A Political Journey Through Gujarat and Delhi

From organisational work in the BJP ecosystem to more than a decade as Gujarat Chief Minister and then the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi, Modi's career has seen major elections, policy decisions and political controversies.

His journey also represents the changing nature of Indian electoral politics over the past two decades. From the Gujarat Assembly to the national stage, his career highlights include his appointment as Chief Minister in 2001, the political and legal scrutiny after the 2002 Gujarat violence, the BJP’s 2014 Lok Sabha victory, the 2019 re-election, and the establishment of a third government after the 2024 election.
