NHAI Plans 31‑Km Elevated Expressway to Jewar Airport

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans for a 31-kilometer, eight-lane elevated expressway connecting east Delhi to the newly opened Noida International Airport at Jewar. This part of the corridor will be along Yamuna Pushta road towards Okhla barrage and through Chi IV in Greater Noida to avoid the busy Noida Expressway.

The project, which has been handed over from UPEIDA to NHAI, is designed to be a seamless link to Jewar Airport, which started passenger operations on June 15, 2026. IndiGo inaugurated the first flight from Lucknow and cargo services began from Chennai. It is expected to host 12 million passengers each year and will relieve Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport of this load.

According to officials, the elevated corridor will have three local access loops to connect with the surrounding areas to make traffic flow smoother. The detailed project report is currently being prepared and is expected to be completed within 2 years. The expressway will reduce travel time from east Delhi to Jewar much faster and is expected to be used by the passengers and cargo operators.

The strategic significance of this project is the ability to decongest existing routes and provide a quicker alternative to the busy Noida Expressway. NHAI will make airport commuters efficient by creating a dedicated elevated corridor as part of the overall infrastructure push in the National Capital Region.

Public reaction to the announcement was generally positive, with many celebrating the improved connectivity. Social media users have described it as a much-needed uplift for the region’s transport system. But some have expressed frustration that complementary projects (e.g., metro extension, road links) that are key for last-mile connections are being delayed.

It is believed that the expressway will also enhance economic development in Jewar through logistics, real estate, and tourism. With Jewar Airport being one of the major aviation hubs in the area, the new corridor will be key in linking up the airport with Delhi and neighboring states. NHAI’s plan for the 31 km elevated expressway is an important step in connecting Jewar Airport. Though the process of synchronizing supporting infrastructure is still in progress, the project underlines India’s commitment towards delivering world-class transport links that match the scale of its growing aviation sector.
