The National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken a major step to strengthen the security of India’s competitive examinations by floating a ₹7.5 crore tender to upgrade surveillance and monitoring systems.
The move comes after the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, which triggered nationwide protests, legal scrutiny and calls for sweeping reforms in the country’s examination process.
According to the tender papers, the NTA is looking to deploy advanced security technologies to maintain the integrity of high-stakes entrance examinations like NEET, JEE Main, CUET, UGC-NET, and national-level tests. It will also enhance the monitoring system at examination centres, stop malpractice and will also help to make evaluation transparent.
The proposed security overhaul is to use AI-powered surveillance systems, biometric verification, real-time monitoring, high-definition CCTV cameras, and centralized command centres.
All these technologies will be able to detect suspicious activities in real time and alert authorities to any malpractice that is affecting the examination process.
The decision follows the huge controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 examination, where allegations of question paper leaks, cheating networks and irregularities led to investigations by various agencies.
The issue reached the Supreme Court, and the government subsequently announced greater safeguards for future examinations.
Officials say that modern surveillance infrastructure will reduce the likelihood of organized cheating and paper leaks. Biometric attendance systems are expected to eliminate impersonation, and AI-based monitoring can identify unusual behaviour inside examination halls in real time.
Apart from physical security improvements, the NTA also expects to strengthen its digital infrastructure. Secure encrypted data transmission, restricted access to confidential examination material, and enhanced cybersecurity measures will be part of the revamped examination framework.
Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that restoring public confidence is essential after the damage caused by the NEET controversy.
Every year millions of students are getting ready for these exams and even minor security problems can have catastrophic consequences for those eligible for it.
