Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has led to a major political controversy
By saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tried to lure elected legislators from the National Conference (NC) with offers between ₹20 crore and ₹30 crore to switch allegiance.
Abdullah said that several National Conference MLAs were approached with huge monetary inducements after the Assembly elections.
These attempts were made to weaken the ruling alliance and to cause a breakdown of government in Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said that the BJP had been attempting to replicate political methods such as that in other states as a way to encourage defections.
But he said the National Conference legislators remained united and rejected the alleged offers, and the party’s elected representatives in the local community were standing by the people’s mandate.
Abdullah said his party was not surprised by such attempts and repeated that similar political tactics were seen in other parts of the country. He said the National Conference’s strength is in unity and commitment to protect Jammu and Kashmir.
In my opinion, this claim by Omar Abdullah is hard to believe. If an MLA was really offered ₹20–30 crore along with a ministerial post. Most politicians would probably accept such an offer, join the party, become a minister, and keep their pockets full. pic.twitter.com/2E80AfyCwB

The allegations have intensified the political debate in the Union Territory and opposition parties and political observers are monitoring developments closely.
Abdullah didn’t name the MLAs who were allegedly approached or provide documentary evidence to back up the claims but his comments have generated a lot of political debate in the country.
The BJP has categorically denied the allegations. Party leaders accused Omar Abdullah of making sensational claims without proof, saying that such views were calculated to divert attention from governance issues.
BJP representatives told us that the party believes in democratic politics and denied trying to influence legislators through financial incentives. They challenged the Chief Minister to provide evidence if such offers had indeed been made.
The latest accusations come at a time of high political tension in Jammu & Kashmir after recent elections. The region is still a battleground of the National Conference, the BJP and other regional parties in elections and governance, development and constitutional issues.
Political analysts said the accusations could compound the tension between the ruling National Conference-led administration and the BJP.
In recent years, accusations of attempts to engineer defections in Indian politics have become more common as well as legal and constitutional arguments between the government and the courts have become more frequent.
In spite of the controversy the National Conference has said that they are confident that its legislators will remain loyal to the party. Omar Abdullah said that his government had the support of its alliance partners and dismissed speculation about any immediate political instability.
As the political war of words continues, whether more evidence is forthcoming to support claims or whether the issue is only a matter of political rhetoric remains to be seen. The episode has once again exposed the razor-wire politics in Jammu and Kashmir, which is where every single big statement has political significance.
