A shocking case of alleged sexual assault has emerged from Maharashtra’s Palghar district, where a 19-year-old woman was gangraped by six men after being forcibly taken to an abandoned dak bungalow in the Talasari area. One suspect has been arrested and three others are being sought for questioning while the remaining suspects are believed to be in hiding.
According to the complaint filed with the police, the woman had gone out with a male friend on the day of the incident. The two were standing near a highway in Talasari when six men came on two motorcycles. The accused confronted the couple before forcibly pulling the woman away to an abandoned dak bungalow in a secluded location nearby.
Police said the isolated structure was used by the accused to carry out the assault. The woman contacted the authorities and filed a complaint at Talasari Police Station. Based on her statement, police booked all six men under relevant provisions of criminal law and immediately started efforts to identify and apprehend those involved.
The accused may have chosen the abandoned building because it would have been far from the crime scene and not likely to see the crime or hear calls for help, investigators say. Police canvassed the site and began collecting evidence that would help to put together the sequence of events and build the case.
Police arrested one of the six accused very quickly after the complaint was filed. Three more were detained and are being investigated to find out what people might have done or are still involved and about where the other suspects are. Search teams have been set up in Talasari and around Talasari and other places to trace those who fled after the incident.
The police are recording the survivor’s statements, as well as her male friend and others who may have some information that could be relevant to the investigation. And investigators are trying to reconstruct what happened before the abduction, whether the accused knew the woman or whether the attack was an accident or random attack.
A senior police official said the investigation is still in its early stages and that investigators are investigating each individual accused. Police seek to figure out who forced the woman into the abandoned bungalow, who was there at the site and whether all six suspects were directly involved in the assault.
Forensic teams will also examine evidence from the abandoned structure. That evidence will help establish the facts of the case in conjunction with witness accounts and other data collected as well; witness accounts and evidence.
The incident has once again raised women's safety concerns, especially in isolated areas and in the areas of abandoned buildings that can be a place for criminal activity. Residents in the Talasari area are concerned about the incident and a police presence is needed in any deserted properties and highway stretches.
Police have appealed to the public for any information that could help track the remaining accused. Anyone who assisted the suspects in evading arrest would also face legal action.
