The Bharatiya Janata Party has stepped up preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with reports suggesting that the party is considering fielding several senior leaders, ministers and former Members of Parliament in the state polls.
According to party sources cited in reports, the BJP is examining a strategy similar to the one used during the 2022 Assembly elections, when prominent leaders were asked to contest directly from Assembly constituencies.
The discussions come as the BJP strengthens its organisational machinery in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the next Assembly election. A BJP core-group meeting held in Lucknow in September discussed preparations for the 2027 polls and organisational campaigns.
The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary and senior party functionaries.
Sources cited in the report said the party could ask some of its senior leaders and former state presidents to prepare for Assembly contests. Several ministers in the Yogi Adityanath government could also be considered for tickets. Former MPs are another group reportedly under consideration as the party works on its candidate-selection strategy. However, the final list of candidates has not yet been announced, and the discussions remain part of the BJP's preparations for the election.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak are among the prominent leaders whose electoral roles will be closely watched. The Uttar Pradesh government currently lists Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister and Maurya and Pathak as Deputy Chief Ministers.
The BJP's approach has a precedent in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Yogi Adityanath contested from Gorakhpur Urban, while Keshav Prasad Maurya contested from Sirathu in Kaushambi. Maurya lost that contest to Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) candidate Pallavi Patel. Brajesh Pathak, meanwhile, contested from Lucknow Cantonment and won the seat.
The 2022 election resulted in the BJP winning 255 Assembly seats on its own, according to election data, allowing the party to form the government with its allies. The result also saw Yogi Adityanath return as Chief Minister, beginning his second consecutive term in the state.
The BJP has since been working on its organisational structure ahead of the 2027 contest. In June 2026, the Uttar Pradesh BJP announced a 46-member team of office-bearers, including vice-presidents, general secretaries and secretaries, with the team tasked with organisational affairs and preparations for the Assembly elections.
The party's organisational preparations have continued through September. BJP state leaders and senior national functionaries have held meetings to discuss election readiness, government programmes and coordination between the organisation and the state government. The September core-group meeting was part of this wider preparation.
The BJP also expanded the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet in May 2026, bringing the Council of Ministers to its maximum permitted strength of 60. Former state BJP president Bhupendra Chaudhary and former SP leader Manoj Pandey were among those inducted as Cabinet ministers, while other leaders were promoted or inducted as ministers.
The possible decision to field ministers, former MPs and senior office-bearers would therefore form part of a broader candidate-selection process. Reports indicate that the party is assessing organisational performance, public outreach and constituency-level considerations while preparing for the polls.
The BJP has not yet made a final announcement on which senior leaders or former MPs will receive Assembly tickets.
With Uttar Pradesh having 403 Assembly constituencies, candidate selection is expected to remain a major focus for all political parties as the 2027 election approaches. For the BJP, the coming months are likely to involve further organisational meetings, constituency-level assessments and discussions over potential candidates.
The final BJP candidate list will determine which ministers, former MPs, senior office-bearers and sitting legislators are actually asked to contest. Until formal announcements are made, the names being discussed should be treated as possibilities rather than confirmed candidates.
The party's preparations, however, indicate that its organisational and electoral planning for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections is already underway.
