The Prime Minister's Itinerary in Udupi

PM Modi's visit to the coastal town is centered around the revered Sri Krishna Math and marks a significant occasion for the region.

  • Date: Friday, November 28, 2025.
  • Purpose: The Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in the ‘Laksha Kantha Geetha Paaraayana’ (Chanting of the Bhagavad Gita by one lakh voices) event organized by the Udupi Paryaya Sriputtige Sri Krishna Mutt.
  • Schedule: He is expected to arrive at the Adi Udupi helipad and proceed directly to the Sri Krishna Math for Darshan of Lord Krishna and to address the participants of the Geetha Gayana program.

This is Modi's first visit to the Sri Krishna Math as Prime Minister, outside of an election campaign, making it particularly significant for the math and the community.

The Rationale Behind the Holiday Request

MLA Yashpal Suvarna submitted a letter to the DC outlining the reasons for requesting a general local holiday across the Udupi district.

Public Participation: The holiday would enable the maximum number of people in Udupi to attend the massive "Laksha Kantha Geetha Paaraayana" event without having to take personal leave or miss work/school.

Security and Logistics: Due to the Prime Minister’s high-security protocol (SPG cover), significant movement restrictions, traffic diversions, and temporary closures are necessary. Declaring a holiday would minimize inconvenience to the general public and essential services, ensuring a smooth flow of traffic and security operations.

Moment of Pride: The MLA emphasized that a sitting Prime Minister visiting the district (outside of election campaigns) after nearly three decades is a moment of great pride and celebration for the people of Udupi.

The request specifically asks for all Anganwadis, schools, colleges, and government offices (excluding essential services) to be declared closed for the day.

The DC's office is currently reviewing the request, and an official announcement on the declaration of a local holiday is expected soon.
