Over 96,000 workers in Jammu and Kashmir are now enrolled at PM-SYM by March 2026. That’s that such awareness of the scheme is spreading even where pension coverage is historically low. Common Service Centres (CSCs) and online services allow labour to start signing up.

Workers between the ages of 18 and 40, less than ₹15,000 per month can join PM-SYM. They contribute a small monthly wage, of ₹55 or ₹200, depending on their age, and the government agrees to this. The worker gets a pension of ₹3,000 every month after turning 60, with government insurance in hand.

In late 2025, the government introduced Voluntary Exit rules. In times of emergency (medical reasons, job problems or change in the job situation), workers are advised to withdraw their contributions. Hence, the scheme is more realistic, as workers do not feel like leaving money behind, due to scarcity. In a case of subscriber death the spouse can continue the scheme, or recoup with interest.

Importance of PM-SYM

For workers: Provides for old age financial security and dignity.

For Families: guarantees continuity of pension or refund for spouses.

For economy: Encourages savings among unorganised workers so as to reduce vulnerability.

For people without the full benefits to be aware of PM-SYM is still not enough. In such informal work the awareness campaigns remain important. Contribution until approximately 60 also needs to be made by those living off unstable incomes.

PM-SYM is increasingly flexible and available, with new rules that take away from payments for emergencies. The number enrolled more than doubled, mainly in Jammu & Kashmir and the scheme continues to provide ₹3,000 monthly pension to the unorganised workers after retirement, these numbers also are at such a level. A way of keeping millions of workers dignity, but also security, as the backbone of India's economic well-being.
