Patna was filled with celebration as Jan Suraaj Party workers gathered to cheer their leader Prashant Kishor, who is winning by a large margin in Bankipur Assembly bypoll. As of the latest count in Round 22 of 31, Kishor is leading by 12,809 votes over the BJP candidate and is heading towards a historic turn in one of Bharatiya Janata Party’s most important urban bastions.
If the trend continues till the end of counting, it will be the BJP’s first time in nearly 30 years that it loses the Bankipur Assembly seat. The constituency in the heart of Patna has long been considered a BJP stronghold and a symbol of the party’s urban supremacy in Bihar.
Jan Suraaj supporters, who gathered outside counting centres and the party office, shouted slogans and drummed with sweets to celebrate the growing lead, said that the lead was not only an electoral advantage, but also a reflection of Bihar’s changing political mood.

Bankipur is long one of the safest seats for BJP. For decades now, the constituency has been backing the party, making the recent bypoll one of the most watched elections in Bihar.

The BJP has not officially conceded the race and is looking forward to the second round. Party leaders said they are confident votes still to be counted will narrow the margin.
However, the current trend has already ignited a broad debate within Bihar’s political circles, and many see the Bankipur bypoll as a referendum on emerging political alternatives in the state.
