A major road accident was averted near Ankola in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district after a private bus travelling from Bengaluru to Goa overturned on the roadside. All 25 passengers on board escaped with minor or no injuries, avoiding a major tragedy.
According to preliminary information, the accident happened when the driver lost control of the vehicle as he was driving on an area of road near Ankola. The bus was thrown off the road and overturned, and passengers were shocked by the impact, the driver said.
Residents who witnessed the incident immediately rushed to the accident site and began rescue efforts. They helped passengers climb out of the overturned bus through the emergency exits and broken windows before emergency services arrived. Their quick response made sure everyone on board was evacuated safely.
Police and emergency service personnel arrived soon after the accident occurred. They secured the area, controlled traffic, and ensured that no passenger was trapped inside the vehicle. Ambulances were also sent out as a precaution.
The injuries to some passengers were minor bruises and shock, and no deaths or life-threatening injuries were reported, officials confirmed. A few passengers were taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and first aid before being released, they said.
The private bus left Bengaluru and was going to Goa with around 25 passengers when the accident happened. Most of the passengers were there for vacation and business. They said they were relieved everyone was safe.
The police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Initial evidence indicates that the driver lost control of the bus, but the road conditions, vehicle condition, mechanical failure, weather, and driver fatigue could also be factors, the report said.
Traffic around the route slowed as the overturned bus blocked part of the road. Police diverted cars into different lanes and brought in a crane to remove the damaged bus and return traffic to normal.
Officials are also going to look at the vehicle to see whether there are mechanical problems that could have caused the accident. The driver’s statement, as well as statements from passengers and eyewitnesses, will be investigated.
Road safety experts have consistently stressed the need for cautious driving on highways connecting Karnataka’s coastal districts, especially during monsoon periods when roads can be slippery, and visibility may be reduced.
The incident is a reminder of the importance of road safety as well as regular maintenance checks of passenger vehicles. Thanks to the quick response of residents, emergency personnel, and timely medical assistance, there was no loss of life.
