There was a serious road accident near the Bhumkar Bridge in Pune’s Narhe area at early hours of Saturday morning on September 19 after a container truck collided with multiple vehicles on the Pune-Bengaluru highway.
The crash took place at 12:15 a.m. according to Hindustan Times and killed one 22-year-old worker and wounded five others. Local reports have cited two deaths and several injuries. Police were investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Container Truck Crashes Into Vehicles
According to police reports, the container truck struck two small four-wheelers before hitting a tempo from behind. The tempo was then pushed into another truck that was driving ahead.
The accident caused major damage to the vehicles involved and police, emergency personnel and others arrived at the site.
The incident occurred in the busy Katraj-Dehu Road bypass section near Bhumkar Bridge, which links to the Pune-Bengaluru highway.
Worker Dies After Sustaining Injuries
Hindustan Times reported that Sandeep Jagannath Kumar, 22, a worker from Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district, was travelling in the tempo when the collision occurred.
He suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Five other people were injured in the accident. The container truck driver was also injured and was taken to Sassoon General Hospital for medical treatment before being taken into police custody, the report said.
Police Book Container Truck Driver
As a result, police have booked the container truck driver in the collision, identified by Hindustan Times as “24-year-old Dhanraj Ganpatlal Vaishnav”.
He has been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act for alleged rash and negligent driving.
Police said an FIR was registered after a complaint and that further investigation was going on.
Reports Differ on Death Toll
There is currently a discrepancy between early reports about the number of people killed.
One death and five injuries were reported by the Hindustan Times, while Punekar News and The Bridge Chronicle reported two deaths and several injuries. Those local reports also said the container was travelling from Satara towards Mumbai and brakes apparently failed near the bridge.
The brake failure reported so far has not been independently established in the reports, and we expect the police investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Traffic Affected on Pune-Bengaluru Highway
The accident also affected traffic movement around the Bhumkar Bridge and Navale Bridge area.
Emergency response teams and police were on site and worked to clear the damaged vehicles. The crash happened at midnight when traffic was still moving through the highway section.
The driver's alleged negligence and mechanical failure were reasons for the collision, including the driver's alleged negligence and the mechanical failure, investigators are still investigating the collision. Police are still investigating the driver and the accident-related factors that led to it, they said.
As a report, the casualty figure should be updated once Pune police issue a definitive official statement because the initial reports are not in agreement.
