In a shocking case that has drawn wide attention in Maharashtra, police arrested a self-styled godman and seven of his associates after they said he sexually exploited a woman in Pune for nearly 15 years by telling her that he had divine powers.
The accused was identified as Radheshyam Mishra, or Radhamohan Mishra. Mishra presented himself as a spiritual leader, and his followers believed he was God, the investigators said. Police say he used this power to control followers and take complete control of their lives.
The case began in light of serious accusations against the godman. In her complaint, she said Mishra sexually exploited her for years and exploited her faith and trust. The accused was religious and spiritual in nature, and he tried to prevent the victim from questioning his conduct, the complaint said.
The woman also claimed she was subjected to degrading practices in the guise of spiritual rituals, the complaint said.
After the complaint, Pune police investigated and conducted a raid on the ashram of the accused. During the search operation, officers seized several electronic devices, cash, documents and gold ornaments that were believed to be of interest to the investigation. The seized material is now being examined to see if further offences may have been committed.
Police arrested Mishra along with seven of his associates, who are believed to have been involved with him in running the ashram and facilitating activities linked to the allegations. Further investigation will look at whether other followers have been exploited or coerced.
The arrests have renewed debate on the influence of self-proclaimed spiritual leaders and the risks of blind faith. Social activists and women’s rights groups have called for tighter oversight of religious and spiritual organisations to prevent vulnerable individuals from becoming victims of abuse.
Legal experts say the case of alleged abuse by influential religious figures can be especially difficult for victims because they often face emotional, social, and psychological barriers to coming forward to report abuse.
The accused and his associates were arrested by police and taken to a local court. The court remanded them to police custody to be questioned, and the evidence gathered. That includes the allegations and financial transactions made in the ashram and the role played by the co-accused.
Police officials have since said the investigation is ongoing and that more charges may be considered based on evidence obtained. Anyone with information would be encouraged to cooperate with investigators.
The case serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance against people who misuse positions of trust and authority for personal gain. Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that exploitation and abuse are thoroughly investigated and that those found guilty are held accountable under the law.
