Rahul Gandhi Mocks PM Modi Over Viral ‘Melody’ Moment, Says ‘PM Is Busy Distributing Toffees’

The attack on Narendra Modi by Rahul Gandhi is fiery; he has made the now-viral “Melody” situation public when he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preoccupied with publicity (or rather, the PR phase in this case) and symbolic performance and not on practical and meaningful actions as we know from the issues, big national issues are at work in India, common people faced the masses.

The remarks were posted by the Congress leader in reaction to a video of a public session in which PM Modi was seen distributing chocolates or saying “toffees” in connection to a conversation with other politicians, which went viral on social media.

Opposition leaders, and some online users, started calling it the “Melody moment,” inciting political banter and memes across platforms like Twitter and Facebook. In a separate news story, Mr Rahul Gandhi delivered a sledgehammer at India's Prime Minister and said, “The Prime Minister is busy distributing toffees while people are struggling with inflation, unemployment and rising prices."

At a political rally, talking to the media and party workers. The Congress MP claimed the centre government's concern was much more image-building than resolving legitimate public problems. He pointed out that issues like unemployment, high fuel prices and economic inequality, as well as farmer distress, need more government attention.

Rahul Gandhi took it as far, blaming the BJP-led government for taking the attention of people with meticulously planned media operations and viral videos instead of proposing concrete solutions to the people's economic and social woes.

The clip "Melody" quickly exploded on social media after social media users posted videos and memes when PM Modi was delivering chocolate to young supporters at an event where he engaged warmly with children. The symbolism was widely praised by the Prime Minister’s supporters as evidence of his genial side and friendly relationship with people, while the critics condemned it as political optics.

The BJP, on the other hand, went further and reacted forcefully to Rahul's criticism. The Congress MP was accused by party leaders, and even basic public conversations were ridiculed and attempted to politicise a completely innocent moment. The party spoke with spokespeople who said that the way PM Modi interacted with the people reflected the humility of the public, as well as an emotional connection. This wasn’t political drama, and this wasn’t political power gamesmanship!

And multiple BJP leaders also pointed out that Rahul Gandhi’s comments had caused anger among supporters of the Prime Minister regarding his popularity. The opposition didn’t know how much emotion Modi inspires in his supporters in various sections of society, they said.

The political back-and-forth rapidly generated online responses, and hashtags for the “Melody moment” emerged online. The incident soon became a viral talking point for viral internet memes, edited videos and political commentary inundating platforms like X, Instagram and Facebook.

Political critics contend that the episode illustrates how minor incidents involving the country’s leading political leaders can rapidly evolve into a big political plot. Political communication, as a medium, spreads quickly, and now, viral video clips are enlisted as branding strategies for every side.

The Congress party has consistently been vigorously battering the BJP government over economic issues, with the BJP continuing to emphasise PM Modi’s appeal to the public and outreach among the masses as strengths ahead of an upcoming political fight.

And the question of ‘Melody’ has also offered new chapters to what in fact has already been the war of words between the parties, this time when both Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi used the viral moment to intensify their political messaging.
