One person died in an electrocution as he walked in the Tonk district of Rajasthan as waterlogged roads started to flood down after heavy rainfall. It was in Malpura district and has once more raised fears for public safety and electrical infrastructure in the monsoon season.
The victim was walking through a rain-soaked street when he walked into water that had been electrified by leakage from a nearby power pole, the police said. Witnesses said the man suddenly collapsed after touching the water.

The shock was recorded on CCTV cameras installed in the area. The video shows the victim walking toward the power pole and falling down on the road in a moment of panic; the victim’s neighbors were shocked, the police said. The video has also been used to underscore the dangers of electrical failure in heavy rains.
The residents of the area immediately contacted the police and emergency services. Within minutes, police arrived and immediately tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to revive the victim. The young man could not be saved and was declared dead.
Police officials said that the electricity leak from the power pole might have energized the rainwater and made people walk into danger. But the real cause of the electrocution will be known only after a thorough technical investigation, they said.
Police and an investigation are still in progress. The reasons could be because of the neglect of electrical infrastructure, said the investigation team. The electricity department will also examine the power pole and other electrical networks to look out for problems.
The incident has drawn the eyes of local residents who have advised the authorities to regularly check electric poles, transformers and overhead power lines especially in monsoon and to keep them in check. Waterlogging together with damaged electrical equipment are very serious risks and timely maintenance is very important to prevent such accidents.
If electrical poles, transformers or exposed wires are nearby, people should avoid walking through flooded streets. During heavy rains, we should report all unusual sparks, buzzing sounds and damaged electrical installations to the electricity department immediately.
Residents should also avoid stepping on electric poles or standing water in areas with electrical faults.
