Local people said they worried the leopard was crossing the road and dangerously approaching stationary vehicles at the far corners of their village. The animal reportedly appeared on a bus dash camera; the footage has been reposted by villagers and social media channels, and fears have been voiced by the public over its presence.

The episode took place in Valethopu, in Channapatna taluk, where leopard sightings have apparently been soaring in recent weeks. The animal, residents said, had suddenly moved onto the side of the road and had bolted across the road alongside vehicles passing by. Fortunately, there have been no injuries or attacks said to have occurred over a recent sighting.

The leopard sightings, but the leopard is back, and the villagers, farmers, commuters and people who came home late at night. Some residents said they will now avoid going out on some small, isolated roads right after dark for fear of having to bear witness to the animal.

Other parents also worry about kids and seniors who live in villages near forested areas. Several residents have said that they would consider banning outdoor travel in the early hours and during the night (as a means of keeping the peace), a policy they said they still carry out more frequently.

Attacks or other unexpected incidents will force the Forest Department to respond fast, some said, and they have reported to leaders. Locals want more surveillance, more cages set up and close surveillance and monitoring of leopard movements in and around affected villages, etc.

Forest Department officials also did inspections of the site and the said area, the report says. Officials have surveyed the area and are now ready to ramp up surveillance, using video cams to follow the animal’s movements. Forest authorities are also prepared to advise villagers about precautions like staying out of the bush at night, not wandering the forest edge alone, and immediately informing the nearby village people if new sightings are observed.

People-wildlife conflict has grown into a growing issue in Karnataka, from the edge of the forest to the surrounding area. Additionally mentioned are more open land, less forest protection and disturbance to the environment that causes such wild animals to move up so far as residential land.

Leopards can evade human aggression in a big way, conservation researchers say, but they are slow to approach villages and can have a few accidents if they approach villages close by. The area of the Channapatna, as purported by the government, is an ecosystem to watch over and guard against the worst aspects of nature. The Forest Department, now, members of the public hope, is hasteningly moving to protect those trapped for the worst.
