New Delhi: BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri is in the midst of a new political battle for his words about protesting students as the unemployed sons and daughters of 'puncture-walas' have drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, activists and social media users who say he has made derogatory remarks about students and members of a particular community.
A video of Bidhuri’s speech went viral on the internet. In the video, the BJP leader appears to mock the people protesting and refers to them using the controversial phrase.
Critics say the term “puncture-wala” has been used in political rhetoric as a stereotype of Muslims and economically weaker sections. They say that language only serves to reinforce social prejudice and undermines the dignity of people who are participating in legitimate democratic protest.
Opposition leaders also reacted to the comments and accused BJP leaders of encouraging inflammatory language from a political standpoint. “They are dividing people by saying that these comments polarise and deflect attention from important issues of students and youths life,” said many opposition members to the media.

The BJP has not yet said if it plans to take any disciplinary action against Bidhuri. Party leaders, in the past, have justified controversial comments of individual members as personal opinions; critics say repeated instances point to a broader pattern in political communication.
