Reliance Jio’s Big Space Bet: 1,600 Satellites Planned at 650 Km And It Take on Starlink and Amazon Leo

Reliance Jio is planning for an ambitious satellite network with more than 1,600 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), and the Indian telecom giant is well positioned to scale up satellite-based internet service.

The proposed network at an altitude of about 650 kilometres would also increase competition with satellite internet companies such as Starlink and Amazon Leo.

Satellite communications are also becoming an increasingly important part of the global connectivity landscape. Telecommunication systems are more and more integrated into the world network of communications networks.

Traditional terrestrial networks are mostly based on mobile towers, fibre-optic infrastructure, and other ground-based systems to provide links to rural and remote areas that are not as well-served by traditional internet access and are not easy to get to, and therefore more expensive to build the infrastructure (and thus more difficult to afford and use) to run.

Jio's Proposed Satellite Strategy

The reported plan to invest 1,600 satellites at about 650 km above the earth is a significant endeavor. A large LEO system can offer a much wider coverage by using many satellites that continue to move around the planet. Since LEO satellites are much closer to earth than geostationary satellites, satellite internet service can be much more low latency and more responsive.

For Jio, such a network could complement its existing telecommunications infrastructure. It is already well established in India’s mobile and broadband markets, and satellite connectivity would also help in providing internet access in remote and underserved areas.

The proposed constellation also could offer connectivity for businesses, institutions and places where terrestrial broadband infrastructure is not available or unreliable. Remote villages, rural enterprises, transportation networks and other difficult-to-connect areas could benefit from satellite-based services.

Competition with Starlink and Amazon Leo

Jio's reported satellite ambitions come at a time when competition in the LEO broadband market is rapidly increasing. SpaceX's Starlink is now one of the world's most prominent satellite internet networks, using a huge network of LEO satellites to connect multiple markets.

Amazon also plans to launch its satellite internet business under the Amazon Leo programme, formerly known as Project Kuiper. For the company, it would build a huge satellite constellation to connect the world with very high-speed internet.

A Jio constellation of 1,600 satellites would therefore place the company in an increasingly competitive global market. Jio will be competing with not only traditional telecom companies, but also satellites and launch and ground-network companies with advanced satellite, launch and ground-network infrastructure.

Why 650 km Altitude Matters

The proposed altitude of about 650 km is an important element of this plan. LEO satellites are much closer to Earth than geostationary satellites (about 35,786 km). The shorter distance may reduce the time signals take to pass between satellites and users.

But LEO networks need many satellites because the individual satellites are moving so fast relative to locations on Earth. A large set of satellites supports continuous coverage as the satellites go out of range.

Operating such a network also involves sophisticated ground infrastructure, satellite tracking, network management and user terminals. The scale of the proposed constellation shows the technological and financial commitment involved.

Potential Impact on India's Connectivity Market

Jio’s satellite network could become an important component of India’s digital infrastructure if the project progresses. Satellite broadband could supplement fibre and mobile networks instead of simply replacing them.

Another competition might also mean that access and pricing for consumers in areas with limited broadband options could be improved. Businesses may also use satellite connectivity as a backup connection in areas where terrestrial networks are vulnerable to outages.

The initiative also could strengthen India in the space communications sector; it could help to diversify India’s orbit and communications market in a fast-growing space-based industry. As satellite internet is one of the major areas of investment in the world, one big Indian telecom company could play a role in developing domestic satellite and communications capabilities.

However, building and running a 1,600-satellite constellation would be a technical, regulatory and financial challenge. The satellites need to be designed, manufactured and launched, while the operators need ground stations and spectrum access, network management, and customer equipment.

Regulatory approval and spectrum policies will also play an important role in determining how satellite broadband services develop in India. The company will have to align its plans with developments in the regulatory framework for satellite communications.

The proposed Jio constellation is therefore more than just a technological expansion of the telecom infrastructure. It signals a convergence between the telecommunications and space industry.

 

As companies like Starlink, Amazon Leo and possibly Jio compete to provide internet connectivity from space, satellite broadband would become an increasingly important component of the world’s internet ecosystem.
