A 23-year-old woman in Bengaluru died in suspicious circumstances in Sakleshpur, Hassan district on September 15, 2026 and a police investigation has been launched into her death. According to Hassan Superintendent of Police Shubhanwita, the Sakleshpur Rural Police received information about it at about 7:50 pm on Tuesday.
The deceased woman was identified as Varsha, a 23-year-old Bengaluru resident. She had been travelling to Sakleshpur with two friends, Raghu and Darshan. They had stayed in the Sakleshpur rural area when they were there.
The police said that on September 15, Varsha collapsed while taking a bath. She was initially taken to Hettur Hospital for medical attention. She was taken to the Sakleshpur Government Hospital where doctors declared her dead.
After the hospital's intimation, local police informed Varsha's parents in Bengaluru about the death. Her parents then traveled to Sakleshpur and approached the police. SP Shubhanwita said that the family filed a complaint asking to investigate the circumstances of their daughter’s death.
The police registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) under Section 194, Clause 3 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as an initial investigation. A UDR is used by police to formally inquire into deaths under circumstances that need examination before the cause and circumstances can be conclusively established.
The dead woman's body was then moved to the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) for postmortem examination. The examination will play a critical role in determining the cause of death and whether there were any internal injuries or other medical issues that were not apparent at the initial examination.
SP Shubhanwita said no external injuries were seen in the preliminary inspection of the body. But she stressed that the absence of visible injuries at the first stage does not establish the precise cause of death. The final determination will depend on the findings of the postmortem examination and the official medical report.
Police investigation continues and an investigation into the circumstances that led to Varsha's collapse and death will also be conducted. Information will be gathered from those who accompanied her on her trip and others who may have been aware of the events before it happened.
At this point, police have not publicly established that the death was caused by any person or circumstance. The death being suspicious means the reason that the police were investigating but the cause of death is still a matter of medical examination and investigation.
The postmortem report will therefore be a crucial piece of evidence in the case. Based on its results, investigators may decide whether more investigation is required or further legal action can be launched. Obviously, conclusions regarding what happened in the death would not come out until the report is done.
The incident has attracted attention because Varsha had traveled from Bengaluru to Sakleshpur a few days before her death. Sakleshpur is a popular tourist spot in Hassan district and people from Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka are attracted to the place for its scenic surroundings and tourist attractions.

For now, authorities will try to establish a sequence of events from the moment Varsha arrived in Sakleshpur to the moment she was taken to hospital. Statements from her companions, hospital records, postmortem findings and other evidence are likely to be part of the inquiry.
The Hassan police have said the investigation is ongoing. The exact cause of Varsha’s death, including whether any internal injury or other medical factor contributed to it, will be established after the postmortem and official report are completed. Further action will be made based on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
