A serious security breach was reported at Delhi Legislative Assembly after a vehicle broke through one of its gates and caused serious safety concerns about the security of Delhi’s most sensitive government buildings.
As far as we know, the car stormed into the Assembly premises by breaking the gate and went through the security barriers. The unexpected intrusion immediately set off a panic among security representatives and staff at the site.
And in an entirely inexplicable turn of events, the driver did not run away and did not try to run away or disrupt the premises, but instead stepped out of the vehicle and placed a bouquet on the front row of the Assembly building’s porch area. The reason for that is still in question, and investigators are still investigating if it was a symbolic gesture, protest or part of some kind of political move, or just an act of protest or part of a larger plan.
Security officials were quick to respond and detained the driver immediately. He will now be questioned by officials and his background, intentions and affiliations will be investigated. So far, no injuries or damage of any kind beyond the gate breach is reported.
Saying that the Delhi Assembly is a high-security zone, a breach here could point to a vulnerability that could be exploited in more dangerous situations.
The local police and intelligence agencies are now investigating how the car got through the gate, they said. Early observations indicate access control or response timing may have been inadequate, but this is an ongoing investigation and no final report was given.
Investigators are also looking at CCTV footage from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the breach. Security measures in similar government buildings in the capital will be reassessed and strengthened in the wake of the incident, they say.
And while a bouquet may look like a non-threatening thing to put on the table, officials are taking the breach very seriously, given the dangers of unauthorized access to government premises.
This incident is proof that constant vigilance and strong security should be in place in key administrative institutions. More updates are to be given during the period of investigation and more details of the driver’s intentions are to be gathered.
