The deceased is Gita Das (40), while the accused Subhash Das (45) is being treated after injuries were inflicted on himself in the attack.

According to police and local residents, the couple lived in a rented house on School Road in Sodepur. They had married against the wishes of Gita's family and were having persistent marital disputes for years.

The incident took place on Wednesday morning when Subhash allegedly attacked Gita with a knife in broad daylight on a busy street.

Witnesses said he repeatedly stabbed her despite residents’ desperate efforts to intervene. But they were not able to overpower him and Gita collapsed on the road with serious injuries.

At the time of the assault, the accused turned the knife on himself in an apparent suicide attempt.

Both were immediately rushed to Sagore Dutta Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared Gita dead. Subhash remains hospitalised and is said to be battling for his life.

Neighbours Allege Long History of Domestic Violence

People living here said the couple’s relationship had been troubled for years and that repeated domestic violence had already been brought to the attention of the police.

Local residents had previously intervened in violent altercations between the couple, said another resident, Tarun Kanti Das of a suburb in Tambalang.

"The quarrel between the couple has been going on for so much time and we had informed the local police. We had given the couple to the police a few days ago because of domestic violence. In the morning, I saw them bleeding. I immediately called the local club president and took them to the hospital," he said.

Kanchan Basu, another resident, claimed Gita's family had opposed the marriage from the beginning. The police and others had intervened, but the alleged abuse continued to happen, even after police intervention and repeated complaints, he said.

Residents also claimed that Gita had wanted to leave the relationship and was seeking to end the marriage, but Subhash was unwilling to accept the separation.

Police Begin Investigation

The police officials visited the scene soon after the incident.

Barrackpore Police Commissionerate Deputy Commissioner Kartik Chandra Mondal confirmed that an investigation has been initiated.

"We have got some names, we are looking into the matter," he told reporters.

Police are examining the circumstances leading up to the attack, including the couple’s history of domestic disputes and previous complaints made by neighbours.

The incident has once again brought home to people that domestic violence is a big problem and that the need to act at once in cases when multiple complaints of abuse are made is becoming more acute.
