Bengaluru witnessed a political protest as Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra, Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly R. Ashoka, along with other party leaders and workers, took to the streets to call for the resignation of Karnataka Minister B. Nagendra over his involvement in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation scam.
The protest also intensified the pressure on the ruling Congress government, with the BJP raising pressure on the Congress government to address the corporation, as they are trying to push back on the allegations of financial irregularities in the corporation’s finances.
The BJP leaders accused the state government of failing to take sufficient measures to curb the alleged irregularities and called for the removal of the minister while the probe is ongoing. Senior party leaders and workers protested in Bengaluru, where slogans were raised, highlighting the government’s failure to take action. It’s an act from the opposition party trying to turn the scam into an issue that’s going to become a significant political one in Karnataka.
Unauthorised transactions and money laundering allegations against the Karnataka Valmiki Corporation were brought to light. The Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation was established for the economic and social development of the Scheduled Tribes community. The corporation was therefore a source of great concern as funds were allocated for development and welfare.
BJP leaders have consistently advocated for the punishment of those responsible for the alleged financial misconduct. They have also questioned the political and administrative responsibility of the corporation. The opposition held a protest in Bengaluru again and demanded B. Nagendra’s resignation for allegations of gross misconduct and for an independent minister to take moral responsibility and step aside.

Allegations should not be treated as proven guilt unless proven through due process.
The controversy is, of course, a major issue for Karnataka’s political landscape and could remain one. The BJP is not giving up on continuing protests and public debate, and so the Congress government is very likely to face questions in the future regarding the scam. It is also a topic that goes beyond the Scheduled Tribes community as it speaks to money and not only is this the issue of funds but is also about people’s rights.
