Sudden Demise and Condolences

Swaraj Kaushal was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, after complaining of chest pain in the afternoon. Despite immediate resuscitative measures by the emergency medical team, he could not be revived and was declared dead later in the day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to offer his condolences, paying tribute to Kaushal's distinguished public service. PM Modi noted Kaushal's work as a lawyer dedicated to the underprivileged, his lasting impression during his tenure as the youngest Governor of India, and his noteworthy insights as a Parliamentarian.

His daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, a sitting BJP MP from New Delhi, shared an emotional tribute on X (formerly Twitter), remembering her father's affection, discipline, and patriotism. She wrote: "Your departure has descended upon me as the deepest pain of the heart, but the mind holds onto this belief that you have now reunited with Mother, in the presence of God, in eternal peace."

A Distinguished Career in Law and Public Service

Born on July 12, 1952, Swaraj Kaushal was a highly respected Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India. He holds the distinction of being designated a Senior Advocate at the age of 34, a testament to his legal acumen.

His career was marked by several historic achievements:

  • Youngest Governor: At the age of just 37, he was appointed the Governor of Mizoram in 1990, becoming the youngest person ever to hold the gubernatorial post in India. He served until 1993.
Mizoram Peace Accord: He played a pivotal role as the constitutional adviser to the underground Mizo National Front, contributing significantly to the drafting and signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which ended two decades of insurgency.
  • Parliamentarian: He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha between 1998 and 2004.

Swaraj Kaushal was married to the late BJP stalwart and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in 1975. Sushma Swaraj passed away in August 2019 following a cardiac arrest.

The final rites for Swaraj Kaushal are scheduled to be held later today at the Lodhi Road crematorium in Delhi.
