Tamil Nadu has around 582 sub-registrar offices where property registration is carried out daily. People registering land and property documents have been increasing in the past decade, and the Registration Department is one of the main sources of revenue for the state. The 9 per cent charge is collected during property registration, including stamp duty and registration fees. About 7 per cent goes to the government treasury; the department is also the revenue source for the state government.

Since registration usually occurs on auspicious days and special occasions, the department usually faces a high demand for online appointment tokens. Due to the heavy demand in this area from the public and the expected rush on May 29, the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department has decided to increase the number of reservation slots in the state.

According to the official statement issued by the department, offices with one sub-registrar will now issue 150 reservation tokens instead of 100. Similarly, offices with two sub-registrars will issue 300 reservation tokens instead of 200. In addition, 100 high-volume registration offices in Tamil Nadu will provide 150 ordinary reservation tokens instead of the existing 100 tokens.

The department has also expanded the Tatkal token facility for urgent registration. At present, 12 Tatkal reservation tickets are provided each day. For May 29 alone, an additional four Tatkal tokens have been sanctioned, which brings the total number of Tatkal tokens to 16. This will be helpful for those seeking urgent property registration without delay.

It was taken at the request of many parts of the public as they expected to register for this day to be the occasion for large numbers of people on Vaikasi day. The idea will reduce overcrowding and reduce the burden on citizens who are often unable to get the online booking slots on the most prosperous and auspicious days.

The special arrangement has been welcomed by the public, especially middle-class families and first-time property buyers who are usually unable to get registration appointments during peak demand periods. Increasing regular and Tatkal tokens will help the Tamil Nadu government to ensure a smooth and faster registration service.

The public is advised to visit the official site of the Commercial Taxes and Registration Department immediately to book the new slots and take advantage of the opportunity. The application forms and online documentation should be submitted in advance, officials added.
