Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall From Today; IMD Issues Alerts for Several Districts

Some parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to get heavy rainfall beginning from today, and weather officials forecast widespread showers and thunderstorms in various districts by early morning today. It’s a concern to the authorities, as there are low-lying and flood-prone areas where waterlogging could occur, the weather official said.

The rain is being driven by good weather conditions in the Bay of Bengal and its surrounding regions. Heavy showers will reach a number of districts, and flood and traffic problems will be felt in the coming days, giving respite from hot and humid weather and raising concerns of localised flooding and traffic jams.

The IMD said that districts in northern, central, and coastal Tamil Nadu are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai may get heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

In western Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, and The Nilgiris could also get moderate rainfall. Southern districts like Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari could see scattered to widespread showers over the next few days.

At night and evening hours, weather experts warned that intense spells of rain can also present a threat to isolated areas, and thunderstorms can be dangerous during thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds. Fishermen should be aware of official weather bulletins before venturing into the sea due to changes in weather conditions affecting coastal areas.

The expected rain will also be beneficial to agriculture in many regions of the state where seasonal rains are important, especially in areas dependent on them. But urban centres might suffer from waterlogging, traffic congestion, and poor visibility during heavy rainfall for a short time.

Local administrations are on high alert, and disaster management authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation. Emergency response teams are on standby for flooding or weather-related issues.

Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, carry umbrellas and rain gear, and keep up with weather advisories through official sources. Drivers should take care on slippery roads and avoid driving through waterlogged areas.

With the rainfall continuing over the next few days, Tamil Nadu will see a change in weather conditions, with cooler temperatures and the possibility of localised disruptions in several districts across the state.
