Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026: TVK Emerges as Surprise Contender, DMK Slips to Third in Early Trends

Tamil Nadu's politics took a strange turn on counting day. Early on, it was clear by the 2026 Assembly Elections that there was a huge increase in votes for Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), the Tamil Nadu political party led by a former actor and politician, Vijay.

One of the biggest surprises was the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) seeming to fall to third place in several constituencies in the first counting rounds. TVK's surprising victory has caused traditional Tamil Nadu political calculations to turn upside down, as Tamil Nadu has followed the DMK and AIADMK for a long time.

Trends on Election Commission's preliminary results revealed TVK candidates were on track or making strong gains in several urban, youthful and predominantly youth-oriented districts, which pointed to increased popular support towards Vijay’s political start, and the prospects were looking good for TVK candidates’ progress for early Election Commission data.

The DMK under its chief minister, M.K. Stalin, was expected to be heavily contested as anti-incumbency sentiment and voters' need for political alternatives influenced early voting trends. Data from preliminary counting suggests that the party entered the election in a run for another term in office behind AIADMK and TVK in multiple seats.

TVK’s emergence is described by political observers as one of the most monumental developments in Tamil Nadu politics of recent decades. Vijay’s rise among youth voters, first-time voters and urban middle-class communities is apparently translating into electoral momentum to its advantage. TVK’s visibility increased dramatically during the election campaign by means of massive campaign rallies, social media outreach, and anti-establishment messaging.

The AIADMK's success also took place in another set of areas after falling behind in previous elections. According to the earliest indicators, the party was still a dominant force in the western and southern parts of Tamil Nadu, and the contest among the three major parties was highly competitive.

Counting of votes had started at 8 am amid the heavy security and crowding from all over Tamil Nadu. Police and generalist police forces and central security forces with numerous members in each area were deployed around counting centres to police and assist in the monitoring of order and security after the start of the event.

Election officials noted that in some of the close-up contests in a wide range of constituencies, it could take hours to tally results. TVK supporters hail early leaders outside party offices, in Chennai and other cities where they have supported their campaigns to the letter - although political analysts said the numbers could shift as rounds of counting proceed. Nonetheless, the party was successful to the point where Vijay has already emerged as a credible candidate in the changes in Tamil Nadu’s political scene.

Multiple top DMK figures told the party workers they should remain firm and confident, claiming that the first rounds frequently are based on postal ballots and some select numbers. They added that the result may still favour the ruling alliance after rural constituencies finish counting. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Election is being perceived as a turning point in Tamil Nadu’s political history.

And the two-party monopoly that has defined Tamil Nadu politics in the last two decades can be forever altered by the continued power of TVK should it continue to win a significant number of seats. The focus now, as counting continues, is the one on whether TVK can turn its surprise rise into a major electoral breakthrough or if the established parties are likely to catch up in the next round of counting.
