The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts in Tamil Nadu ahead of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next few days, as the weather system is expected to dominate the state and damage travel and daily life.
The rains in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected with the monsoon in a synchronous phase. The weather system in these parts of the state is expected to intensify and waterlogged and the state could be affected by localised flooding, waterlogging and road traffic or road accidents, meteorological officials said.
The orange alert means that residents and local managers should be ready for potentially severe weather. IMD officials have said that some districts may be hit by heavy to very heavy rainfall in areas around the Western Ghats and coastal belts. Thunderstorms, for example, with lightning and strong winds, are expected and are likely to be very hazardous to outdoor activities and travel. They also advised people to avoid open areas during lightning events and keep updated with official forecasts and alerts.
The expected rainfall is due to good monsoon conditions over the Bay of Bengal and peninsular India. Moisture-laden winds and atmospheric instability are likely to produce intense rain-laden clouds over parts of Tamil Nadu. It has also been forecast that rainfall could continue for the next few days and some districts may have short but intense downpours. During the active monsoon season, this weather pattern is common and can lead to rapid accumulation of rainwater in urban and low-lying areas.
District administrations are advised to keep a close eye on vulnerable areas of the country, especially those prone to flooding and landslides. Disaster management teams are on high alert, and local bodies have been advised to make sure drainage systems are working properly to prevent waterlogging. Fishermen also have been advised to be very careful as weather conditions in the surrounding coastal waters can become rough during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
Punctuality is likely to be observed for large cities like Chennai and other major cities, with cloudy skies, occasional showers and thunderstorm activity in the background. Traffic congestion and slower commuting hours are expected in the rainiest hours of the day. Commuters should plan for that and avoid unnecessary journeys during heavy rain periods. Schools and institutions are expected to closely monitor the weather situation, and local authorities should be prepared to respond if conditions get worse.
The IMD has urged citizens to stay updated on the weather bulletins and take safety measures as per local authorities. People living in low-lying areas should stay alert for sudden water accumulation, and farmers should take necessary precautions to protect crops and livestock from heavy rainfall and strong winds. Emergency response teams are on standby to respond to any weather-related event.
But with a new period of active monsoon weather in Tamil Nadu, the orange alert is a warning that vigilance and the need for preparedness are not lost. Rainfall will help with water resources and agriculture, but public safety is the priority until the weather system weakens and conditions improve, the government said.
