Ladakh’s all-female music group Team Stringmo has gained much recognition for its soulful musical tribute to the bravehearts of the 1999 Kargil War at the recent Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations in Drass.
The group (of mostly teenage girls and young women from the Kargil region) played two patriotic songs to the audience at Lamochin View Point. Their music, remembrance, and patriotism brought out the soldiers who fought for the Kargil side.

The tribute was held on July 26, marking the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. The day is for India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War.
Team Stringmo’s performance was significant because of the location. Lamochin View Point is surrounded by Tiger Hill and other mountain peaks that were key to the Kargil War. The landscape around it was a vivid reminder of the hardships that Indian soldiers had to endure to defend the country.
As the young artists played out in the mountains at the center of the conflict, the atmosphere among the audience was very emotional to see the young artists performing with the mountains. These patriotic renditions were a heartfelt tribute to the soldiers for whom courage and sacrifice are still the core of Kargil Vijay Diwas’s legacy.
Team Stringmo was formed in 2019 with the aim of promoting women's empowerment through music and artistic expression. The group has provided a platform for girls and young women from Ladakh to display their talent and encourage greater participation in cultural and public activities.
The group comes from the Kargil region, which has a rich cultural heritage and a strong community identity. Through their performances, the young artists have tried to combine local talent and themes of unity, patriotism, and social empowerment.
The Kargil Vijay Diwas programme showed that young women are a part of making our memories and helping us to connect with the history of India. Music was also used for older people to connect with younger generations of Indians and to bring to life the history of India through the music of the past.
The Kargil War was fought in 1999 between India and Pakistan after Pakistani troops and militants occupied the strategic positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control in the Kargil sector. Indian forces launched military operations to recapture the occupied heights in adverse weather and terrain conditions.
The conflict was in the high-altitude areas, such as Tiger Hill and other strategic peaks. The Indian armed forces eventually regained control of the occupied territories, and July 26 is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas annually to commemorate the victory.
The commemorations in Drass are particularly emotional because the region was one of the main scenes of the war. The families of the fallen soldiers, military personnel, government representatives and citizens come together to remember all the losses.
Team Stringmo’s musical tribute added a particular cultural significance to the anniversary programme. The show demonstrated that remembering can be through music, art, storytelling and so on.
The group’s all-female membership also conveys a message of empowerment. The young women could provide a voice, create opportunities and inspire others through a national event, they said.
The performance has received praise from viewers and social media users, with many praising the group’s effort to honor the Kargil bravehearts through patriotic music. The tribute was described as emotional and inspiring for the young artists coming from the region that experienced the conflict.
Team Stringmo’s journey since its formation in 2019 reflects the ever-growing significance of youth-led cultural initiatives in Ladakh. The group continues to promote women’s participation while using music as a medium to celebrate identity, unity and national pride.
The young artists of Team Stringmo provided an inspiring reminder that Kargil bravehearts still inspire new generations as a nation as India celebrated the 27th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Their display at Lamochin View Point, with Tiger Hill and the historic battle peaks, was a moving tribute to courage and sacrifice—and a potent demonstration of the talent and determination of Ladakh’s young women.
