Thrissur, home of Kerala’s cultural capital and host of the famous Thrissur Pooram, has added another distinction to its name. The city has entered the top 10 Indian cities on the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 and is the only city from Kerala to be in the list.
According to the 2026 edition of the Hurun list, Thrissur is ranked 10th in the country, with people from the city having a total wealth of around Rs 1.73 lakh crore. The report identifies 1,810 people from 163 cities with a net worth of at least Rs 1,000 crore.
The development highlights the growing concentration of private wealth in a city that has traditionally been associated with jewellery, banking, finance and retail businesses.
Thrissur’s position is especially significant because the city has a smaller population and industrial footprint than some of the major metropolitan centres that dominate India’s wealth rankings.
Gold And Jewellery Businesses Drive Thrissur’s Wealth.
One of the strongest reasons for Thrissur’s wealth concentration is the city’s long association with the gold and jewellery trade.
The 2026 Hurun report identifies Joy Alukkas as Kerala’s wealthiest person with wealth of approximately Rs 1,02,200 crore, which makes him 21st nationally. The wealth of T S Kalyanaraman and the family of Kalyan Jewellers is around Rs 40,900 crore and ranks 64th nationally.
The city is also home to V P Nandakumar, associated with Manappuram Finance, whose wealth is estimated at Rs 15,900 crore, and Jos Alukkas and family, with wealth of around Rs 14,000 crore.
Together, these four names form an important part of Kerala’s wealth representation in the 2026 list.
The concentration of jewellery businesses in Thrissur is not a new phenomenon. According to the district administration, the city is a major commercial and business centre, and jewellery and textile retailing are two of the city's key commercial activities. Thrissur is also a banking and financial services centre.
The city’s business ecosystem has helped many family-run enterprises to grow from local businesses to large national and international ones.
Thrissur’s Business Legacy And Gulf Connection.
Thrissur’s rise as a wealth centre is also connected to Kerala's long-standing relationship with the Gulf region.
According to the Hurun report cited by The New Indian Express, there are 32 people from Kerala on the 2026 rich list, and their combined wealth is estimated to be Rs 6.3 lakh crore. Most of Kerala's wealth creation has been associated with businesses in the Gulf and investments in India.
This diaspora link has been instrumental in the growth of businesses across Kerala, particularly in retail, jewellery, construction, healthcare and finance.
Thrissur's economic profile is one of traditional entrepreneurship and overseas business links. The district administration describes the city as a major commercial centre and highlights its strengths in bullion, banking, finance, retail and other industries.
The jewellery sector in the city is very much a part of the city’s economy. There are many major jewellery companies in Thrissur, and other major jewellery firms are also rooted in Thrissur, and the whole district has also established textile, manufacturing and finance businesses.
Wealth Growth Even With Weak Stock Market.
The Thrissur development is in sharp contrast to the rise of private wealth in India.
The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 identifies 1,810 individuals with wealth of Rs 1,000 crore or more, up 128 from the previous year. Their total wealth was around Rs 187.5 lakh crore, which is 12.8% higher than the previous year.
At the same time, the report noted the growth in wealth was achieved despite the decline of stocks in the major Indian stock markets during the period covered by the list.
India now has 391 dollar billionaires, according to the 2026 Hurun report. That number has increased from the previous year, with new wealth being generated from artificial intelligence, manufacturing, defence, green energy and other sectors.
While Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru are the cities with the largest number of people on the national rich list, Thrissur’s appearance in the top 10 shows a different trend of wealth creation.
The city's wealth is very much linked to those businesses that have flourished over the last few decades in jewellery, retail and financial services.
Thrissur Gains Another National Recognition.
The Hurun ranking comes shortly after Thrissur was recognized in the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026. It was noted that the city was ranked ahead of Kochi and several other Indian cities in the index.
Together, the two developments point to Thrissur’s transformation from being a cultural and religious centre into something more than that.
The city is very much associated with the Thrissur Pooram, temples and Kerala’s cultural heritage. At the same time, its commercial economy has produced many big business groups with lucrative business operations well beyond the state.
The city’s 10th-place position in the M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026 also provides another insight into the city’s economic status. With Rs 1.73 lakh crore in the combined wealth of its listed residents, Thrissur is among India’s richest cities in private wealth and the only Kerala city among the top 10.
