Tamil Nadu minister N. Anand inaugurated desilting work at Okkiyam Maduvu floodwater channel in Chennai to enable it to carry rainwater effectively and prevent flooding in nearby residential areas from heavy rainfall.
The desilting drive is a key part of the state government’s larger urban flood mitigation strategy. Over the years, Chennai has faced repeated flooding during the monsoon season, and so we need to maintain stormwater drains, lakes, canals, and floodwater channels.
Clearing out accumulated silt, debris and vegetation from Okkiyam Maduvu channel will mean smoother water flow and faster drainage during intense rain events.
Minister N. Anand said at the launch of the project that the government was taking steps to protect residents from waterlogging and flood-related problems. He added that regular maintenance of floodwater channels is necessary to maintain Chennai’s drainage system and so that the city can remain functional given the weather forecast of heavy rains in the coming months.
Officials from the Water Resources Department and local civic bodies were present for inspection and launch of desilting work. The minister visited the condition of the channel and instructed engineers to ensure the work is done within the time frame and to ensure the quality of work is done in line with the plan.
The Okkiyam Maduvu floodwater channel is an important drainage channel for several parts of South Chennai. Over time natural sediment deposits and waste accumulation can reduce the channel's carrying capacity and may lead to overflow during heavy rainfall. The desilting process will restore the channel to its original capacity, and rainwater shall flow freely through the connected waterways.

Like the Tamil Nadu government has done similar desilting and restoration projects in Chennai’s lakes, canals and stormwater drainage systems as part of a wider disaster preparedness plan. These preventive measures are to reduce flooding, increase public safety, and minimize damage to infrastructure during the monsoon season.
Residents living close to Okkiyam Maduvu channel welcomed the initiative and said there are hopes that maintenance will prevent the waterlogging seen in previous years. They also recommended to the public not to dump garbage into water channels as solid waste is a cause of blockages and doesn’t help drainage.
Periodic desilting along with better stormwater systems and responsible waste management makes Chennai very resilient to urban flooding. Work will continue to monitor crucial waterways in the city to prepare them for the rainy season ahead.
The desilting of the Okkiyam Maduvu floodwater channel reflects Tamil Nadu’s proactive approach to urban infrastructure maintenance and disaster risk reduction as well as efforts to build a safer and more flood-resilient Chennai.
