The tension erupted in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on 28th September 2026, after a large crowd clashed with police at the site of Shahi Masjid, where a portion of the mosque is proposed to be removed as part of a road-widening project. Police deployed tear gas shells after stone pelting was reported and heavy security, including Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel, remained in the area.

The clash followed an overnight meeting by members of the local Muslim community who opposed a plan by the local Muslim community for demolition of part of the mosque. Police had sent out huge numbers of cops to the site as tensions remained high.
As per reports, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation is doing road-widening work in the area as part of preparations for Simhastha 2028. The proposed road between Kanthal Chauraha and Gopal Mandir is planned to be widened to around 15 metres. Some of the Shahi Masjid falls into the proposed alignment.
Stone-Pelting Reported, Tear Gas Used
The situation was tense Monday morning, as a large number of people confronted police officers. Stones were thrown on Monday morning, some reported, and stones were pelted during the clash.
Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and regain control over the area. RAF personnel were also present on the scene and police forces kept a small number of officers close to the mosque.
The incident was captured in pictures posted by news agency ANI. There was a huge police presence at the site, they said.
Why is the mosque part of the Road Project?
The dispute centers around a section of Shahi Masjid which is on the road alignment already planned. The administration has linked the road-widening work to traffic management and preparing for the large number of devotees expected in Ujjain during Simhastha 2028.
Muslims have pushed back on the removal of the mosque and have said that another alignment should be thought of. Mosque representatives also challenged the proposed action through legal steps.

High Court Proceedings
The matter has also reached the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The Indian Express reported that a single-judge bench had earlier dismissed petitions challenging the municipal corporation’s action while the mosque committee moved to a division bench.
The legal proceedings and the road project have therefore become central to the dispute around the mosque.
Heavy Security Remains in Ujjain.
After the attacks, security remained tight around the Shahi Masjid. Police and administrative officials were deployed to prevent further escalation and RAF personnel also were present.
The newspaper said authorities had already established a huge security presence in the area before Monday’s confrontation because of the overnight protest and the expected administrative action.
