The alleged social media post appeared on Independence Day and has been picked up by Pakistani media because of the Pakistani flag in the post. Police are trying to figure out what happened to the photo and the motive behind it.

According to the information available, the account was linked to Talib Khan, and police visited his residence in Sambhal as part of their inquiry. However, Talib Khan was not present at the house when officers arrived.

His father told the police Talib was in Delhi at the time. Authorities will verify the information and may also attempt to question Talib about the social media post and the circumstances in which it was uploaded.

The investigation highlights an increasing role social media has been playing in law enforcement for some fairly controversial or sensitive content. Posts on Instagram can be shared very quickly, and so law enforcement needs to be able to follow up on where they came from and what they wanted to say.

Police will probably investigate the alleged post, account details, and other digital evidence available to them. The content may also be flagged as violating any laws or regulations, and authorities will decide what the right response is, if any.

The timing of the alleged post has added to its sensitivity. India’s Independence Day is celebrated on 15th August with patriotic programmes, national flags and celebrations in the country. So, content on display of another country’s national flag can thus attract great public and political interest, particularly if it is also shared with patriotic material.

At this stage the police investigation should be seen as distinct from a final determination of wrongdoing. The alleged Instagram post and the circumstances surrounding it are under review, and any legal action would be made according to the evidence collected by the authorities.

Police visiting Talib Khan’s home is a step of inquiry rather than proof of guilt. It might then be to see if he created or uploaded the post, who did it, if it was under his control when the post was made, and what the circumstances were.

This case also demonstrates the importance of responsible social-media use, particularly around nationally significant occasions. And digital content can be quickly shared, downloaded and redistributed so that it can be widely shared even after it has been removed or deleted.

Sambhal has already been a target of increased public interest over social media issues in the past, so this new situation is likely to be closely watched locally.

The next step in the case could depend on whether police will be able to contact Talib Khan and record his statement. Investigators may also look at technical evidence and the original social media content to establish the sequence of events.

The UP Police are investigating the alleged Instagram post, while the reported statement from Talib Khan's father that he was in Delhi is also likely to be verified.

Further action will depend on the outcome of that investigation and whether the investigation finds evidence of any offence related to the alleged social media content.
