In an extraordinary achievement that has brought pride to Uttarakhand and the whole country, 17-year-old Lucky Rawat from Chakrata has been selected as a National level 'Icebreaker of Knowledge' to represent India. He will travel worldwide for a 10-day experience of scientific and educational adventure in the North Pole with a world class of students from around the world and will participate in one of the most unique educational experiences available to teenagers.
The expedition, which began in Murmansk, Russia, has been gathered from 22 countries and includes students from India, Bangladesh, China and Russia. The students will be travelling on the world famous nuclear powered icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy from the North Pole (90° North latitude) which is one of the most remote and inaccessible locations on earth.
A Tough Three-Stage Selection Process
Lucky Rawat’s selection was the result of an intense and highly competitive three-stage evaluation process. Students from other countries had to prove their knowledge, problem solving skills and passion for science in the first round of the competition.
Lucky was successfully selected as India’s representative for the expedition despite having passed these three stages successfully. Only one student from each country participated in the international programme, so the achievement is especially impressive.
Lucky was very proud to represent this country on such a global platform, he said.
"I am from Chakrata in Uttarakhand and have come here as India's ambassador for this expedition. It is a 10-day expedition during which we will travel to the North Pole. We will be among the very few people who have actually reached the North Pole," he said.
Learning Science Beyond the Classroom.
The 'Icebreaker of Knowledge' programme is intended to inspire young minds by mixing science with culture. Students will be involved in a range of educational activities on Arctic science, climate research, environmental conservation, geography and technology on this expedition.
Students will get to see the environment in the Arctic where they will be able to experience real-life conditions in the near-free Arctic and see for themselves what it means to be on the frontline of climate change from experts in the region and see the effects of climate change from experts working there, as well as the importance of polar ecosystems, and be exposed to them.
Apart from scientific learning, the expedition also fosters interaction between students from different cultural and educational backgrounds. Through workshops, discussions and collaborative activities, participants gain valuable international exposure while forming friendships that transcend national boundaries.

Lucky’s great success has turned into a celebration for his family and the people of Uttarakhand. Ram Singh his father was happy and proud of his son.
"I am proud of my son for clearing the online examination and being selected to represent India. He is going on a 10-day expedition to the North Pole," he said.
