Dramatic footage and snapshots of the incident soon began flooding the Internet, as chunks of the bridge broke and chunks of detritus tumbled into the river below. It was said that the incident occurred at Bhagalpur, an important bridge between North and South Bihar along the Ganga River.

Almost immediately after the collapse was reported, local authorities arrived, and the police and local authorities began investigating how the bridge had been affected. Initial reports suggested that one of the spans had already deteriorated badly, and authorities are presently investigating the exact cause of that collapse early on.

Preliminary indications are that crevices and structural cracks would have formed over the years, owing to high traffic, bad conditions and poor maintenance of bridges. Most notably, some news at first gave the impression that no major casualties were reported soon after the incident.

When the bridge fell, panic spread among its occupants, much as did that of the majority of a group that had passed through or approached it when it collapsed. Those vehicles included in investigators’ reports were supposedly kept from entering the area after authorities swiftly turned it off to escape future tragedy.

Vikramshila Setu is one of the main road bridges in Bihar and a transit and trade centre. With thousands of people, whether truckers or ferries, on the road every day crossing the bridge, a beam failure would certainly be extremely threatening to the layman. There were cracking sounds right before the frontage in some parts of the structure collapsed, according to witnesses.

Residents lodged video footage of areas of the bridge in turmoil and people surrounding the riverbank nearby as emergency responders rushed to the scene. The pictures spread online, leaving dozens of people incredulous and urging quick inspections of ancient bridges across the state.

Department of road building and engineering officials pored over them to inspect them for a long time afterwards. Authorities will be trying to establish whether the collapse took place during excess load on collapsed structures and whether the supporting frame weakened or eroded, or broke down at the technical level.

Several bridges have fallen in the past decade, and the report added new questions about infrastructure safety in Bihar. Opposition leaders and residents questioned whether maintenance on the infrastructure was being done according to standards that the building was not prepared for, and demanded accountability from the agencies involved.

And it seems as though there was some restriction on or diversion of the bridge as a precaution for safe movement. Traffic on or beyond the bridge is either restricted or diverted through this safe procedure to prevent accidents. Until a certain amount of investigation has been made and concern has been met, take alternative routes, which is the warning for those who would be going between the Bhagalpur districts and any neighbouring districts.

Repair and restoration work would begin after technical experts reported on their findings, officials in government said. In addition, authorities promised that they would investigate the need for cases of negligence, safety and damage of remaining bridge structures. The latest construction collapse of Vikramshila Setu in India has been under even greater public scrutiny and has mandated regular structural audits of the main and essential bridges across the country.
