Purulia, West Bengal: After nearly 12 years in darkness, the family of a bicycle mechanic in West Bengal's Purulia district has finally got an electricity connection in a home they have lived in for years, a victory that was a heartwarming emotional rollercoaster. The breakthrough came just 12 days after they took a complaint to the Chief Minister's Janata Darbar, to the Chief Minister's Janata Darbar for help to resolve a dispute that had kept their home without power for more than a decade.
Krishna Bauri and his family had not only received electricity, but electricity came not only from wires and a meter in their power supply but also came with hope and dignity as well; electricity was not only the beginning of a new chapter, it was also the beginning of a new chapter with hope, dignity, and opportunity.
A Decade-long struggle for basic Necessity
Krishna Bauri, a bicycle mechanic from the village of Laulada under the Puncha Police Station limits in Purulia district, had been trying to get an electricity connection for over 12 years.
Krishna had tried numerous applications and went to various government offices over the years, but all his efforts did not succeed. Krishna said the electricity officials did not extend the power line to his house because of a longstanding land dispute with neighbouring residents.
His family lived without electricity while a lot of other homes around had the same.
Family turns to Janata Darbar
Krishna's wife Kalpana Bauri and their daughter were determined to find a solution, and on 13 July, they went to Salt Lake, Kolkata, to attend the Chief Minister's Janata Darbar, a public grievance redressal programme.
Their complaint was registered as Serial Number 34. Although they were unable to meet the Chief Minister personally, officials received their petition and assured them that the matter would receive immediate attention.
That assurance proved to be a turning point.
Administration Responds Swiftly
A few hours after the complaint was filed, Janata Darbar officials contacted the Puncha Police Station and instructed the local administration to resolve the matter immediately.
The police department, block administration, and the electricity department evaluated the issue jointly.
Both sides in the land dispute were called for a hearing, when authorities reviewed the case and decided there was no reason to deny electricity to the Bauri family.
The coordinated intervention finally cleared the way for the long-pending connection.
Home Finally Lights Up
The following Friday, electricity department officials, along with police personnel, arrived at Krishna Bauri's residence and completed the installation of the electricity connection.
For the first time in 12 years, the family's home was lit up.
Neighbours gathered to witness the emotional moment as years of darkness came to an end.
Krishna Bauri expressed gratitude to the administration, electricity department, police officials, and the state government for resolving an issue that had been pending for over a decade.
More than electricity—A New Beginning
For the Bauri family, electricity is much more than convenience.
Krishna explained that the absence of electricity had very much affected the education of his children. His daughter eventually became a nurse by determination and perseverance, but his son's studies suffered greatly.
According to Krishna, after completing his Madhyamik exam, his son could not continue his education because studying without electricity became increasingly difficult.
The new power connection will give the family a better quality of life through better study conditions, safer nights, and access to essential electrical appliances.
Hope Restored
Krishna recalled that his family decided to seek help after learning about the government’s public grievance programme.
Visiting the Chief Minister's office, officials promised action would be taken quickly.

The family’s story has been one of the most well-documented examples of how timely administrative action, driven by a strong sense of public concern, can settle longstanding public grievances that might not have been resolved unless departments worked together.
