The Central Government has appointed Anurag Jain, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, India’s premier public policy think tank.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment for a two-year tenure, making him one of the country’s most important policy administrators.
His appointment comes at a time when India is accelerating reforms in infrastructure, manufacturing, digital governance, sustainability, and long-term economic planning. Jain will be responsible for driving policy initiatives from the Centre to the states to promote the country's development agenda as CEO of NITI Aayog.
Who is Anurag Jain
Anurag Jain is a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. He has a long history of public service work and has gained the reputation as an effective administrator with knowledge in infrastructure, industrial development, economic policy, investment promotion, and governance.
Before that, Jain was the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, the most powerful office in the state government. He supervised the implementation of the vast government programs, the administrative departments, and developmental projects as Chief Secretary in the state.
A Distinguished Bureaucratic Career
Anurag Jain has held many positions in the Central Government.
He was also a Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. He played a major role in industrial development and supported the growth of industry as well as the domestic and foreign investment, as well as an increase in India’s Ease of Doing Business ranking and the Make in India programme.
Prior to that, Jain also served as Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, where he had a central role in policy formulation and implementation of important national highway and infrastructure projects. He focused on improving road connectivity, logistics efficiency, and economic growth through infrastructure expansion.
He has worked on a number of projects regarding urban development, investment facilitation, public administration, and policy implementation and is one of India’s most experienced civil servants.
What does the CEO of NITI Aayog do
NITI Aayog, established on January 1, 2015, replaced the Planning Commission and is the Government of India’s premier policy think tank. The NITI Aayog promotes cooperative federalism, evidence-based policymaking, and prepares strategies for India's long-term economic and social development.
As the CEO, Anurag Jain will supervise and liaise with the various ministries, state governments, industry leaders, and experts in our organisation and its operations and practice. His responsibilities are:
Adopting national economic reforms. Working together with states on development policies. Promoting innovation and digital transformation. Monitoring flagship government projects. Advising the government on sustainable development and infrastructure planning. Helping India become a developed nation by 2047.
Jain’s appointment comes at a moment when India is focusing on increasing manufacturing, attracting global investments, expanding infrastructure, accelerating green energy projects, strengthening the digital economy, and creating employment opportunities.
This means that in the face of his administrative experience as a central and state government administrator, he is well suited to strengthen NITI Aayog’s role in implementing reform and better coordination between the different levels of government.
His experience in industrial policy, infrastructure development, investment promotion, and governance should help the think tank formulate practical and data-driven policy recommendations.
