Ghooskhor Pandat Teaser Removed: Neeraj Pandey Responds to Backlash

After weeks of internet outrage and legal threat, filmmaker Neeraj Pandey has withdrawn all promotional materials for his next Netflix movie, Ghooskhor Pandat. The announcement follows a debate over the film’s title, which many critics described as “casteist” and “defamatory” toward the Brahmin community, over its teaser, which was revealed earlier this week.

The Controversy: "Ghooskhor" and The Brahmin Sentiment

The backlash began shortly after Netflix launched the first-look teaser on February 3, 2026. The film features Manoj Bajpayee as Ajay Dikshit, a corrupt police officer known in the film as “Pandat.” The pairing of the word “Ghooskhor” (bribe-taker) and “Pandat” (a colloquialism for Pandit/Brahmin), attracted harsh condemnation from local communities and legal activists.

The Allegation: Critics accused the filmmakers of stereotyping and painting an entire caste as corrupt, with no such title ever being used for any other religious or social group. Legal Action: A lawyer from Mumbai lodged formal complaints, along with some social organizations, while a writ petition was allegedly filed in the Delhi High Court requesting that the release be stayed.

Neeraj Pandey’s Clarification

Neeraj Pandey opened his mind on Friday February 6, 2026 & wrote an extended post on Instagram to clear the air. He stressed that the film is a fictional cop drama, saying no such title was intended to make any mockery of any caste. "In this respect Pandat is just a colloquial name for a fictional character. The story is one about a person’s decisions and activities and does not speak for or reflect any caste, religion or community," Pandey said.

As a filmmaker, he also mentioned, he treats the task with "a deep sense of responsibility," and that the project was only made with "sincere intent and solely to entertain."

Promotions Stopped For a "Context"

Pandey acknowledged causing harm to the people watching, and confirmed with all sincerity that the teaser is removed from YouTube and all social media platforms. He added that the team believes that the whole package of the film should be experienced in full rather than merely evaluated based upon a "partial glimpse."

Ghooskhor Pandat is the first directorial venture of veteran writer Ritesh Shah, and is accompanied by Nushrratt Bharuccha, Akshay Oberoi, Saqib Saleem, and Divya Dutta. The promotions are held up, but the film is still scheduled for a Netflix release later this year, though it’s uncertain if the brand will have a chance to run title reviews or be required to pay for additional legal fees.
