Australia Squad Under Fire: Travis Head Responds To Hayden’s ‘Pile Of Mediocrity’ Remark

Travis Head has responded to criticism from former opener Matthew Hayden in response to the selection of Australia's Test squad for the upcoming series in South Africa. Hayden said the team was a “pile of mediocrity” after the recall of Nic Maddinson, but Head said the current group is capable of handling criticism from former players.

Australia will start their three-Test tour of South Africa next Friday, October 9. Both teams will be closely watching the series as they continue their campaigns in the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.

Hayden’s comments come after the Australian selectors recalled Maddinson to the Test team. The 34-year-old left-handed batter is returning to the national team after a long time out as he has last played Test cricket for Australia a decade ago. He was selected for the Test match after injuries took Josh Inglis and Cameron Green out of the team.

Hayden, speaking on a podcast, strongly criticised the selection and called the Australian team “the greatest pile of mediocrity that we’ve seen in a generation of cricket.” His comments quickly became part of the discussion around Australia’s preparations for the South Africa series.

Travis Head reacts to criticism.

Meanwhile, Head was asked about the criticism ahead of the first Test in Durban. While he did not name Hayden in his interview, the Australian batter referred to comments from former players and defended the current team.

“I think it's unfairly judged a fair bit from a group of past players, pretty much that put the bullet through a lot of players, which I think is unfair,” Head said.

And even then he said former players were entitled to express their opinions, even if they were critical of the current generation.

“But that’s what they’re paid to do. Some of them need a job, so they go after us, and that’s totally fine,” Head said.

He also said the criticism would not make a big dent in the Australian dressing room. The current group has experience and confidence to deal with external opinions when it comes to the series, he said.

“This group is strong enough to deal with those kinds of things,” he said.

The batter also spoke to former Australian players and said the current generation has great respect for them. But he also admitted criticism is the nature of professional sport and a part of the team’s job of dealing with that.

"It’s unfortunate sometimes to have some of that feedback from a generation of players that we have huge respect for, but that’s the caper,” Head said.

Nic Maddinson: In the news.

Maddinson’s selection has been one of the big talking points ahead of the series. The 34-year-old was recalled after Australia suffered injuries to key players such as Inglis and Green.

Maddinson has previously represented Australia in Test cricket, but has been out of the international game for a long time and is being recalled by Australian selectors.

The selection has led to debate over Australia’s strategy of selection in the team selection process, especially as the team is at another important phase of the World Test Championship cycle. Hayden questioned the quality of the squad, but the Australian team management will hope its selected players can perform against the world-class WTC champions.

For Maddinson, the series is an opportunity to make an impact after waiting years for another chance at Test level.

WTC 2025-27 Final Race

The three-Test series is important beyond the bilateral competition as Australia and South Africa are battling for points in the World Test Championship.

The two teams were also the finalists in the previous WTC cycle, and South Africa eventually won the title. Australia had previously reached the WTC final in both the 2021-23 and 2023-25 cycles and won the championship in the former.

According to the rankings of the race before the series, Australia is at the top of the WTC 2025-27 table with 80 percentage points, while South Africa is second with 75 percentage points. The teams therefore enter the contest with strong positions in the race for the next final.

A successful series could be an effective boost to either side's campaign. Three Tests are scheduled, and so each result might have an impact on the percentage of points and the eventual qualification picture.

South Africa will hope to build on their WTC titles, and Australia will also aim to continue their strong record in the championship.

Focus Shifts To Durban Test

Now that the verbal discussion around squad selection has been the subject of the pre-series narrative, Australia's players will be looking to concentrate on cricket. Head’s response indicates that the team is aware of the criticism, but it’s not a distraction.

The first Test in Durban will provide an early indication of how Australia's new-ball batting group will fare against South Africa. Maddinson will be one of the key selection stories to follow, and Head still seems to be a key member of Australia's batting lineup.

For South Africa, the home series is also an opportunity to strengthen their position in the WTC. For Australia, it will be a chance to reinforce their place at the top of the table and continue with another appearance in the finals.

As the teams prepare for the opening Test, the selection of Australia's squad will be judged on the field. Hayden’s criticism has provided another layer to the build-up, but Head and his team will now have the chance to respond with cricket.
