CSK Bring Back Former Pacer Mohit Sharma as Bowling Coach for IPL 2027

Mohit Sharma will return to Chennai Super Kings once again as a bowling coach with the experienced seamer set to be part of the team as the team prepares for IPL 2027. CSK are currently in the process of rebuilding their coaching system with new head coach Zaheer Khan. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to us Mohit's name was recommended by Zaheer.

Mohit is expected to replace Eric Simmons as CSK's bowling coach. Simmons had been part of the coaching setup under former head coach Stephen Fleming. CSK has begun to rework the backroom staff in preparation for the upcoming IPL season with Fleming and the team.

Mohit would be returning to familiar territory because he was in CSK for two years. He joined the team in 2013 and was part of the team for three seasons before moving to Punjab Kings. In 2019 he went back to Chennai and played one IPL match during that second stint.

Mohit Sharma's CSK Connection

Mohit had one of his best IPL seasons with CSK in 2014. The right-arm pacer took 23 wickets from 16 games and finished the season as the leading wicket-taker in the IPL and earned the Purple Cap. His performances made him a vital member of CSK's bowling attack in that year.

Mohit played 48 IPL games for Chennai and represented the team 10 times in the now-defunct Champions League T20. His familiarity with the franchise along with his international and IPL bowling experience will be the foundation for the transition from player to coach.

Mohit's playing career also included matches for India. He represented the national team in 26 ODIs and eight T20Is, taking 31 and 6 wickets respectively. He was also part of India's 2015 World Cup squad.

Mohit continued his IPL career with other teams and played last in the league in 2025. In December 2025 he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket and also ended his professional playing career.

Zaheer Khan Revamps CSK Coaching

Mohit's appointment is the first major addition to Zaheer Khan's support staff since the former India fast bowler was appointed CSK's head coach for IPL 2027. Zaheer replaced Stephen Fleming, who had been working for the franchise for 18 years.

Zaheer is involved in selecting the rest of the coaching staff, and more appointments will be made in the coming weeks, said CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan. Mohit's inclusion therefore gives us a glimpse into the direction of the new coaching structure.

Zaheer and Mohit also bring together two former India fast bowlers with extensive experience in high-pressure cricket environments. Zaheer will run the wider coaching system, but Mohit would be responsible for the bowling group.

Michael Hussey's Future Unclear

CSK is also in preparation for the batting coaching position for IPL 2027. Michael Hussey, who has been a long-standing member of the coaching staff as the batting coach, will not continue in the same position, according to Cricbuzz. CSK are looking at three or four names before making the final decision on the batting coach.

That’s a tough time for the team. CSK last won the IPL title in 2023 when Dhoni was the captain and defeated Gujarat Titans in the final. Since then the team has missed the playoffs in three consecutive years and so they had to leave Fleming and choose Zaheer as the manager.

That is why CSK are now preparing for IPL 2027 and with the new coaching structure in place and with the new coaching structure to be constructed for CSK now in place for the IPL 2027.

Mohit Sharma’s return has changed the role of Mohit Sharma as well; he is going to be the former pacer who will now move on from being part of the playing squad and assist in developing the next generation of bowlers for the franchise’s next batch of team-mates to form the next generation of bowlers, and the team will be able to do that.

Mohit’s move also brings his CSK career to its full circle. After being a key part of the club throughout his career (especially the 2014 season where he had the best season), he is now returning to Chennai as part of Zaheer Khan's coaching team for the 2027 season.
