The transgender community is considered auspicious by many Hindu families, and its members are often invited to bless families during ceremonies such as childbirth celebrations and the opening of new businesses. These customs reflect long-standing cultural beliefs and traditions. However, problems arise when individuals allegedly pressure people for money, harass them or, in some cases, resort to physical intimidation when their demands are refused.
While many people choose to remain silent to avoid escalating such situations, harassment should not be dismissed simply to prevent confrontation. Nobody should feel intimidated or compelled to hand over money against their wishes. When requests for money turn into coercion or intimidation, they can begin to resemble extortion, and such behaviour deserves attention regardless of who is responsible.
At the same time, it is important to distinguish between voluntary cultural practices, persistent requests for money and conduct that crosses the line into harassment or assault. The actions of a few individuals should not be used to label an entire community.

The Plight of the Transgender Community
It would be incomplete to discuss incidents involving transgender people without acknowledging the challenges many members of the community face in their everyday lives.
Some transgender people experience rejection by their families and are forced to leave their homes. In search of acceptance and belonging, they build chosen families and support networks among people who understand their experiences. For those who have been denied acceptance by their birth families, these relationships can offer a sense of security and community.
However, family rejection can leave people vulnerable to homelessness, harassment, violence and exploitation. Some face discrimination in education, employment and access to essential services, making it difficult to secure stable incomes and live independently.
Without adequate financial support, educational opportunities or access to safe employment, many transgender people face additional barriers to improving their circumstances. These challenges can leave individuals dependent on informal livelihoods and community networks for survival.
It is important to recognise these realities rather than judge transgender people solely through incidents that circulate on social media. The community is diverse, and its members have different experiences, circumstances and aspirations.
Acknowledging discrimination against transgender people, however, does not mean that harassment of members of the public should be ignored. Both concerns deserve to be addressed.
The Transgender Persons Amendment Act, 2026
The recent Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026 has generated significant debate over the recognition and protection of transgender identities in India.
The amendment changes the statutory definition of a transgender person and removes the earlier provision explicitly recognising the right to self-perceived gender identity. It also introduces a medical-board recommendation into the process for obtaining an identity certificate through the District Magistrate.
Human-rights organisations and transgender-rights advocates have criticised the changes, arguing that the new framework restricts self-identification, increases official scrutiny and risks excluding people whose identities do not fit the revised legal definition.
The legislation has also faced legal challenges. Petitioners have questioned whether the changes adequately protect constitutional rights, including equality, personal liberty and freedom of expression.
The government, meanwhile, has presented the amendments as measures intended to protect vulnerable people and address coercion and exploitation involving transgender identities.
For transgender people already facing discrimination, uncertainty over legal recognition and access to protections can add another layer of difficulty.
Why Accountability and Understanding Must Go Together
The purpose of highlighting incidents of harassment is not to create hostility towards transgender people. Instead, it is to recognise that public safety, dignity and accountability must apply equally to everyone.
Members of the public should be able to decline requests for money without fear of intimidation or physical harm. Similarly, transgender people should be able to move through public spaces, seek employment and participate in society without being subjected to prejudice because of their identity.
It is also important not to form preconceived opinions about an entire community based on a handful of videos, viral posts or personal encounters. Online content may not always provide the full context of an incident, and allegations should be assessed using reliable evidence.
At the same time, members of every community have a responsibility to respect the boundaries of others. Where harassment, threats or assault occur, the appropriate response is to document the incident, report it through the relevant channels and allow the facts to be established.
Creating a safer society requires both accountability for individual misconduct and meaningful efforts to address the discrimination and exclusion that leave vulnerable people at risk.
The transgender community deserves dignity, equal opportunities, education, employment and protection from violence. Members of the public deserve the same respect for their personal boundaries and freedom from coercion.
