New Zealand opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of the first ODI against India after suffering a concussion during training at Eden Park in Auckland. Conway was hit on the head when he collided with teammate Matt Henry while trying to take a catch.
New Zealand Cricket announced the development on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 a day before the first ODI of the series. It is another blow for the hosts ahead of facing India in the three-match 50 over series.
How Did Devon Conway Get Injured?
The incident happened during Black Caps training session at Eden Park on Tuesday. Conway and fast bowler Matt Henry clashed as Conway attempted an aerial catch.
The players were immediately attended to by the team’s medical staff on the ground. They also had head injury assessments as a precaution.
After the initial examination Conway was taken to Accident and Emergency department for further tests. The examination revealed that Conway had a concussion.
New Zealand Cricket later announced that the left-hander would miss the first ODI against India.
Matt Henry Also Undergoes Medical Assessment
Matt Henry was also involved in the collision and had a head injury assessment carried out. New Zealand Cricket said both players would be monitored.
However, the board did not announce Henry’s final availability for the opening game or give a return date for either player.
Their medical staff will continue to monitor them before they decide on their participation in the ODI series.
Another Injury Concern for New Zealand
Conway’s injury adds to New Zealand’s injury worries ahead of India series. Hosts have already lost Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra for the upcoming ODIs.
Chapman is nursing a hamstring injury while Ravindra has shoulder problems. New Zealand Cricket had earlier announced that both players would miss the series with replacement players called into the squad.
Conway’s absence is especially important because he has experience at the top of the order. He has been an integral part of New Zealand’s white-ball set up and offers stability in the opening overs.
Who Could Replace Devon Conway?
New Zealand have wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert available as a replacement. Team management could use him for the opening pair but final playing XI will be announced closer to the match.
Captain Mitchell Santner and the coaching staff will have to weigh up what’s available before picking a team.
India vs New Zealand 1st ODI: What Happens Next?
The first ODI between India and New Zealand is on Wednesday 4 November 2026 at Eden Park in Auckland.
India will want to start the ODI series on a high note and New Zealand will be hoping to take advantage of home conditions despite their injury issues.
Conway’s immediate focus will be on recovery and concussion protocols. New Zealand Cricket said Conway and Henry will be given updates in due course as to their further involvement in the series.
