Sri Lanka Test Captaincy Change: Dhananjaya De Silva Steps Down From Leadership Role

Sri Lanka Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down from his leadership position with immediate effect, bringing an end to his tenure as the team’s red-ball captain. He informed Sri Lanka Cricket’s selection committee of his decision and said he believes the time is ripe for the responsibility to be handed over to the next generation.

De Silva will be eligible for selection as a player. His decision therefore means a change in Sri Lanka’s Test leadership and not an international retirement. Most of Sri Lanka's cricketers were in the game long before he came about and he’s going to continue playing for the team with both bat and ball.

“It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” De Silva said in a letter to Sri Lanka’s selection committee.

Dhananjaya De Silva’s Test Captaincy comes to an end

De Silva took over as Sri Lanka's Test captain in January 2024, following Dimuth Karunaratne. Under his captaincy, he led the island nation in 18 Test matches and achieved seven wins.

His tenure had Sri Lanka competing against some of the strongest Test teams in the world. As a captain, De Silva was also responsible for balancing his own responsibilities as a middle-order batsman and bowler as well as leading the side.

De Silva scored 1,130 runs at an average of 36.45 in 18 Tests as captain. He also took nine wickets during his leadership.

While the statistics provide one measure of his captaincy, De Silva had more than his performance on the field. De Silva was part of a leadership team with whom Sri Lanka had the skills to make the Test side of Sri Lanka better and manage a changing set of players.

De Silva will continue as a player.

De Silva is still available to represent Sri Lanka in Test cricket even though he steps away as captain. Even after the leadership change, the national team could still be able to draw from his experience and all-round skills.

At 35, De Silva is one of the most experienced players in Sri Lanka’s senior side. His continued availability would be particularly helpful to a team that is looking to develop younger players while maintaining a balance between experience and new talent.

That decision also helps De Silva to concentrate more fully on his own performances. He can concentrate on his batting, bowling, and contribution to the team with no more responsibility associated with captaincy.

Sri Lanka Cricket Thanks De Silva

Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva acknowledged Dhananjaya’s contribution to the Test team and thanked him for the leadership he provided during his tenure.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes him the best for the rest of his career and thanks him for the leadership he provided to our Test team,” said the SLC chief.

The board’s response shows the significance of De Silva’s contribution to Sri Lankan Test cricket in the last two years. His leadership took place during a period when the national team was trying to establish stability in the longest format and form a competitive Test team.

Who could lead Sri Lanka next?

Now Sri Lanka will have to find a suitable replacement for De Silva as Test captain. Experience, leadership, and the team's future plans are likely to be considered when appointing his successor to the Test captaincy.

The leadership change might allow another senior player to take responsibility or for Sri Lanka Cricket to move to a younger generation of leaders. De Silva's own decision to “pass the mantle” shows that the transition to another stage of Sri Lankan Test cricket was a significant factor in his decision.

The incoming captain will inherit a team that is still a mix of international players but also young talent. Finding that balance will be a key part of Sri Lanka’s Test strategy going forward.

De Silva’s overall Test Record

Dhananjaya de Silva is one of Sri Lanka’s leading modern Test players. He has played 69 Tests and scored more than 4,400 runs, including 13 centuries.

His ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him a valuable part of Sri Lanka’s Test setup. His international record also reflects his longevity at the international level, having remained involved with the national team through different phases of Sri Lankan cricket.

De Silva will continue his international career even after stepping down as Test captain. Sri Lanka will still need his experience to take charge of the team when it comes to its Test assignments in the future and to develop the next generation of leaders.

The focus now turns to Sri Lanka Cricket’s decision on the next Test captain. Meanwhile, De Silva will know that for him it’s a new stage in his international career, as he’s been able to remain active as a batsman while handing over the leadership responsibility.
