ICC Trophy Glory, Series Setbacks: The Growing Questions Over Gambhir’s Coaching

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching has become a big debate in cricket. India has won several big tournaments but the team’s performance in bilateral games and its performance in Test cricket has raised questions about his coaching methods.

Supporters are divided as to whether Gambhir should continue until the 2027 ODI World Cup, step down after the tournament or face the possibility of being removed before then.

Gambhir took over the Indian men's team in July 2024, after Rahul Dravid. Since then, his coaching has been great and bad, and his record is very difficult to judge on the basis of the trophies alone.

ICC Success Versus Bilateral Series Results

India's success in major tournaments has strengthened Gambhir's position. But performances in bilateral cricket have not always matched expectations, especially in Test cricket and some overseas series.

India's poor Test performance has led to doubts about the selection of team formations, match-day strategies, player management and tactical decisions. And recent struggles in overseas cricket have only put the pressure on the coaching staff.

Gambhir fans say that winning big tournaments requires strong leadership and the team should be judged on its performances in big tournaments.

Critics, however, believe India should perform better in all formats rather than having more tournament wins take care of every issue.

BCCI Reviews Add to the Speculation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has been monitoring team performances. In September 2026, the board planned discussions with Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head of cricket VVS Laxman.

The discussions focused on India’s recent performances, preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, player fitness and injury management.

So these reviews are part of assessing the team’s direction and do not automatically mean that the head coach is going to be sacked. But they have added to the debate about whether Gambhir’s methods are producing consistent results.

Will Gambhir Leave After the 2027 World Cup?

Gambhir's reported contract runs until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup. So the tournament is a big moment in discussing his future.

If India does well in South Africa, the BCCI might keep him and continue with him, depending on its appraisal of the team’s performance. A poor campaign will lead to questions of if there is a need to change.

But the board could also make a decision before the tournament if it believes results or team development require a different approach.

There seems to be no immediate announcement that Gambhir will resign after the World Cup or that the BCCI will fire him before it.

Fans Remain Divided

The debate is a reflection of expectations in Indian cricket. The fans want stability and Gambhir has time to form a competitive side. Critics would like more consistency in the Test and bilateral series.

Gambhir's future will therefore hinge on performances and development of the team and on the BCCI’s assessment. So, until a formal announcement is made, early dismissal and a departure after the 2027 World Cup are all possible rather than certain outcomes.
