The team selection for the fourth T20I against New Zealand on 30 October 2026 was under scanner after teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wasn’t picked in the playing XI. Just days before, the 15-year-old had made an explosive knock in the previous match.
India went into the Auckland encounter 3-0 up in the five match series. The series was already over so fans expected team management to give young players more opportunities but Sooryavanshi’s omission became one of the biggest talking points ahead of the game.
Ishan Kishan Returns to India's Playing XI
India made two changes for the fourth T20I at Eden Park. Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan came back from a low grade right adductor strain to replace Sooryavanshi in the side.
Kishan had missed the second and third matches after picking up the injury in the first game of the series. His return gave team management an opportunity to get back to its preferred combination.
The other change was Mayank Yadav replacing experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Sooryavanshi's 45-Run Knock Made His Omission Noticeable
Sooryavanshi’s omission was news because of his performance in the third T20I against New Zealand in Wellington.
The youngster smashed 45 runs off just 19 balls to show he can attack the opposition bowling right from the word go. His aggressive batting kept India in the game and made his case for longer run in the playing XI stronger.
The teenager got his chance after Kishan had pulled out injured. He played in the second and third T20Is but made an important contribution in the latter.
He had done well but with Kishan back on track Sooryavanshi had to go.
Gambhir and Team Management Face Selection Questions
Head coach Gautam Gambhir and the Indian team management could be asked how they intend to manage young talent while keeping a settled combination.
India were 3-0 up in the series already so the fourth match was an opportunity to experiment with batting order and give emerging players international experience.
But picking a fit and experienced player like Kishan made sense as well for the team. He was coming back from injury not because Sooryavanshi had been reported for some disciplinary or performance issue.
The selection decision also shows the competition for places in India’s top order as several players are looking to stake their claim ahead of future international tournaments.
What Lies Ahead for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
Sooryavanshi’s omission is not necessarily a sign of failure for his long-term prospects — he is only 15 and has already grabbed headlines with his fearless attitude and ability to score quickly against international bowlers.
His 45 in Wellington showed why India like him as an exciting batting prospect. The team management now have to decide how best to give him opportunities but balance that with the needs of the senior side.
India’s fourth T20I selection has therefore prompted a wider debate about player rotation, youngsters opportunities and building a strong team for the future.
