In the name of the national team and the country as a whole, Hockey India is under pressure from the public and the people of India. The Outrage and Political Backlash Over Color Change. Hockey India has been thrust into an administrative and public relations crisis following the sudden change of the blue jersey of the national hockey team to saffron. This sudden change in the kit triggered mass national outrage and the football world and politicians were quick to hit back at Hockey India for the so-called “saffronisation” of the national jersey. Patnaik strongly claimed that India's proud hockey history and historical achievements are forever linked to the beloved blue colors, and that any unauthorized modification is a betrayal of the sport’s long history.
Conflicting statements at the top. The tensions between the two factions grew out of control from the inside out and the organization itself is still divided in many parts. To defend the decision, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey had made public comments saying that the blue jersey on the field looks good and makes the player not visible. But it was later revealed that Tirkey had sent emails to Hockey India officials privately and on his own to say that the monumental decision had been made without his knowledge and that the Executive Board was not discussing it.
In response to Tirkey’s questions, Hockey India Director General Commander R.K. Srivastava laid out a detailed 4-page response, with internal communications cited by Sportstar. Srivastava said that the change was made with consensus from the office staff and that visibility was verified through consultation with current head coaches, support staff, team captains, senior athletes from men’s and women’s teams, and kit manufacturers. Srivastava claims that all processes took place in this way: technical contrast reviews, design creation, and administrative approval through high-performance operations.
Defending Precedents and Breakdown. When a group of people on the executive board were accused of procedural violations, Srivastava defended the procedure by recalling some of the past changes. He said those changes to the national jersey pattern and color palette had been made only on the basis of players and coaching staff feedback—not executive direction. A recent uniform adjustment in late 2022 has also been made without committee votes or board approval.
While these administrative explanations can be accepted, independent coverage in the media such as Times Now makes it known that the color of the jersey does not bring the full extent of the crisis to light. The real embarrassment is the blunders in internal governance and a breakdown in governance. In Hockey India, the president was never told about the situation, later defended the policy publicly, and then demanded answers, which shows a very broken system. But a national sports uniform with no transparent meeting, no official record, or signed signatures shows how systemic dysfunction is in place. Color is a matter of preference in sports administration, but the transparent process is an absolute obligation.
