Hence the tournament started in 1992 and has turned out to be one of the weirdest cricket competitions around. A number of famous international cricketers have featured in the tournament over the years.

The tournament returned in 2024 after a break and will take place again from October 30 to November 1, 2026 in Hong Kong.

How does the Format work?

The most significant difference is the number of players. Each team has only six players.

That means every player has a role. Players need to contribute with the bat, ball or in the field because teams have fewer options than in regular cricket.

The current format has six overs in each innings. One bowler can bowl two overs, while the other four players bowl one over each.

Because there are just six overs, batters usually attack from the beginning. There is very little time to settle down or play a slow innings.

What is the 50-run rule?

The retirement rule is one of the most interesting.

A batter who reaches 50 runs retires not out. The player can return later if the team needs them and the match situation allows it.

This rule gives others a chance to bat while encouraging batters to score quickly.

What happens after five wickets?

If five wickets fall then the final batter will be able to continue play.

The batter who was dismissed fifth acts as a runner. The innings ends when the sixth wicket falls.

This rule is different from traditional cricket and allows the last batter to continue even after most of the team has been dismissed.

How were the Older Rules Different?

The rules have evolved.

In the earlier editions there were five overs per innings. A batter usually retired after 31 runs.

The older version also had different rules for wides and no-balls. Therefore, the rules from older Hong Kong Sixes editions should not be confused with the current format.

Why is Hong Kong Sixes so popular?

The biggest attraction is its speed. According to MCC, a Hong Kong Sixes match can last less than an hour.

The short format is where every delivery is important. A few sixes can quickly change the score, while two or three wickets can change the whole match.

The 2026 tournament will include 12 international teams, including eight Full Members and four Associate Members of the ICC.

India will also be in the 2026 edition, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar as captain. The tournament promises fast cricket, big hitting and an international format totally different from the traditional international game.
